BRIDSON’S RECORD 880
AUCKLANDER’S GREAT SWIM NORTHERN GIRLS FAIL Special to THE SU2? GRETMOUTH, Saturday, By winning the New Zealand 880yds swimming title in record time, Gordon Bridson, of Auckland, sufficiently answered the Canterbury officials who have been predicting an early defeat of the Aucklander by A. T. F- Stokes, of Christchurch, Following his wins over 100yds arid one mile, Bridson covered half a mile in 11m 30 4-ss, against D. P. Lindsay’s llm 44 3-ss. Bridson swam in masterly fashion and had absolutely no difficulty in defeating Southern contenders for the title. He is now generally expected to win the 220 and the 440 titles, and, by winning everything from the sprint to the long distance, will establish a performance of the greatest merit in championship swimming in New Zealand. While Bridson did so well for Auckland, and the Auckland water polo team added another win to its performance, the swimming of the Northern girl competitors disappointed greatly. Misses Peggy Robertson and Marie Farquhar failed utterly to reach form and were unplaced in the women’s 220yds, •won again by Miss Kathleen Miller, of Wellington. Bad swimming conditions may have affected the Aucklanders more than the Southerners, but, even then, the performances were very poor. Two seconds were clipped off the men’s 150yds backstroke record of lm 545, by the Canterbury swimmer, L. J. Moorehouse. He has actually improved on this time at Christchurch. A third record was lowered by the Otago boy, R. Geddes, who won the junior boys’ 75yds breaststroke in 59 2-ss, 1 2-5 s better than his previous time. Auckland was unlucky not to win the intermediate girls’ 100yds championship. Miss Sybil Brown was well in the lead when she swallowed water and eventually was forced to retire. Miss M. Mathieson, Otago, won the race. R. Thomas, Auckland, was not placed in the intermediate boys’ 440yds, but he should do well in the sprint. Details:— 880 YARDS MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP Final.—G.
