SPEED ATTEMPT OFF
“WIZARD” SMITH’S RUN POSTPONED TIDES NOT SUITABLE Norman “Wizard” Smith’s attempt to lower the Australian and New Zealand mile record, which was to take place next Wednesday, has been abandoned owing to the present unsuitable state of the tides at Muriwai Beach. On arriving in New Zealand Mr. Smith made an inspection of Muriwai and finding good tides, announced that the beach would be suitable to race his car “Anzac.” But on his visit to Muriwai yesterday, after returning from Rotorua, h© found that there was not sufficient variation in the tides, which made the track far too narrow to attain high speeds. Mr. Howard Nattrass, who has spent considerable time on the beach in search of a suitable track during the past few days, and some officials of the A.A.A., warned Mr. Smith of the danger of racing until there were better tides. Mr. Smith is now waiting advice from Sydney concerning the length of his stay in New Zealand, and it is possible that he may take advantage of the full moon tides, which will be running about February 14, to make an attempt to better the mile record which he established on the NinetyMile Beach recently.
