SCORES IN TE AROHA CUP
Spectacular Trotting
TYPICAL summer weather prevailed on Saturday for the Te Aroha Trotting Club’s annual fixture, which provided some excellent sport. The racing was keen and spectacular, and the many thrilling finishes witnessed, added another testimonial to handicapper C. E. Goosman’s fine list.
The attendance -was large, gate receipts showing an increase of £6O on list year's talkings, although many tkrminj patrons of the club were absent on account of hay-making activiues. The track was in good order, hut the turf was not fast. The management of the function was again up to the fine standard of previous years, wocretary Bush having all arrangements in excellent order. The president, Mr. R. L. Somers, was an admir--tble host and treated visitors with the vtmost cordiality ar.d hospitality. All he officials worked harmoniously to max© the fixture enjoyable and successful, and their efforts were justly rewarded. Mr. R. T. Reid, the stipendiary steward, found everything in order, and there were no unpleasant incidents of any kind to mar the splendid sport. Speculation was brisk, and the totalizator revenue represented in increase £.860 on last year, the respective figures being, 19X9, £14,459; 1030, £15,319. Some Good Prices Backers of favourites had a fair day, hut in several events little-fancied candidates were paying either a first or second dividend. Some Dillon, a hot favourite won the opening event from Margaret Wallace. who was only suppressed in the final pinch. The converted trotter Lord Haitian©, prime fancy in the Improvers’ Trot, scored narrowly from the consistent Paradigm, and the decidedly unlucky Black Magic and Dealer won the slow two-mile event, with the outsider Anseline in second place. The favourite Haerenga Pai lost her chance at the start, a performance she repeated in the Hot Springs Handicap, in which the favourite, Mountain Princess, had to share the prize with Child© Audubon, who was at a good price. The Ruakaka Handicap saw Lady Yvonne threatening to pay close «.n a third of a century for her few supporters, but classy generalship on the part of A. Bryce got Pavlova home by a narrow margin. Backers of Lady Yvonne, however, received a fine reward for second. The Cup proved a splendid contest, and the issue was in doubt right to the deciding point, where Brutus, who was at fairly long edds, defeated Peter Pirate, who was suffering from corn trouble. Hal Chimes, after losing ground in the early stages, finished strongly to secure ths small end of the purse. The public was confident that J. T. Paul would effect sufficient improvement in Akenehi to ensure her silencing the opposition in the Waihou Trot, and the grey justified the confidence reposed in her by winning nicely from Peterson and Paradigm, who fought out a great finish for second money. A fine day’s sport was brought to a close with the popular saddle race. Rolf© Audubon, a warm fancy, settled hi* prospects at the start; and Kingaclure, getting to the front early, hung or. long euough to score from Dad’s Hope, who is establishing a record for seconds in saddle heats. A detailed account of the racing, together with results, is appended. Waitoa Handicap There were several scratchings in the TV'aitoa Handicap, and all money was for Some Dillon, who was backed down to under evens, carrying £375. as against Mountain Princess, £IBO, whUe Margaret Wallace was supported 10 the extent of £6l. The favourite left his feet at the start, but soon settled down «nd at the stands was light up with the leading pair, Don Juan and Margaret Wallace, but leaving the straight Margaret Wallace ajxd Some Dillon went away by themjMdvea, and in the back stretch were ©ight lengths clear of Man-o’-Belle, Daswood. Zealous and Mountain Princess. The leaders were still together at the home turn, but the rear division had decreased the gap considerably, and were only two lengths away, ManO'Belle, Mountain Princess and Zealous being most prominent. Some Billon again left his feet in the run home, but it was only momentarily, and he went on to beat Margaret Wallace fairly easily by one and ahalf lengths, with Mountain Princess a bare length away third. Man-O’-Belle was right in behind the placed trio and then came Zealous, Lady vonne and Myrtlene. Elstow Handicap X© course withdrawals were announced for the Elstow Handicap, and *t a good price the favourite was Lord
Haldane, £299, there also being supP° rt / s or To &o’s Promise (£232) and Paradigm (£223). When they were sent on the way Black Magic and Peter Brown refused to strike a gait, and at the stands the early leaders were Te Ngutu. Kopu Boy, Don Zolock and Joyride, but running down the back Kopu Boy and Te Ngutu were paired off and making play to Don Zolock, Joyride, Lord Haldane and Lackiewood, the back ranker making U P ground fast. There was no material change in the order crossing the top, but Black Magic was noticed making up his ground fast. Lord Haldane put in his claim approaching the turn, and he led round the bend from Joyride, Paradigm, Black Magic and Lackiewood. The favourite held his own with the pressure applied and at the post had a margin of a neck over Paradigm, who beat the rank outsider, Black Magic, by a similar distance. Joyride was fourth, and then came Lackiewood, Te Ngutu and Roto. Manawaru Handicap A nice field of nine took part in the Munawaru Handicap, backers placing faith in Haeranga Pai, £348, the winner, Dealer, being third choice with £315, while Anseline was at a fine price, being entrusted with £IOB. Dealer and Peterson were the first to show out, but the latter was breaking
early and at the stands Benefice had joined Dealer at the head of affairs, this pair being out four lengths clear of lvingsclere, Dad’s Hope, Haerenga Pai and Peterson, and two furlongs further on the leaders had increased their advantage to eight lengths, the order being practically the same. Benefice and Dealer came round the turn together, followed by Dad’s Hope, Peterson and Anseline, the last being well out. Dealer had the race well in hand over the last furlong and won comfortably by three lengths from the fast-finishing Anseline. Benefice, who tired, was two lengths back third, at the head of Kingsclere, Dad’s Hope and Peterson. Te Aroha Cup The Abbey was the only one taken out of the Te Aroha Cup, and solid backing came for Warspite (£627), who had a good call over the second and third choices, Explosion (£469) and Peter Pirate (£453), respectively. The winner, Brutus, was neglected, the £167 against his name enabling his supporters to collect just over double figures. Brutus and Joy Bird were slow away from the mark. Lord Nepean leading out from Bawldy Locanda, Concertina and Peter Pirate, and with the exception of the last replacing Concertina the game order was maintained past the stands, with Warspite, Brutus and Explosion following. With a mile to go Lord Nepean. Peter Pirate, Concertina, Warspite, Brutus (together), Hal Chimes and Explosion were all racing in close formation, and crossing the top Lord Nepean and Peter Pirate (together), Brutus and Hal Chimes was the order, with Mountain Dell moving up fast, and Cornelian and Evelyn Locanda next. Brutus was rapidly overhauling Peter Pirate as they came round the turn, and finishing with a powerful run he wore Peter Pirate down to beat him by a length, with Hal Chimes a similar distance away in third place. Mountain Dell was next, succeeded by Evelyn Locanda, Concertina. Cornelian and Goldman. Ruakaka Handicap Some Dillon earned a penalty in the Ruakaka Handicap as the result of his success earlier in the day. but that did not prevent him from going out favourite over Pavlova, the pair carrying £391 and £385 respectively, with Lady Yvonne entrusted with but £4O, and giving a return touching on double figures. Practically half the field
tangled at the start, Gaza going out best from Don Juan, Man-o’-Belle and Jasper, with a gap to Pavlova and Lady Yvonne. Moving past the top the leader still maintained his position over Don Juan (breaking and losing his position), with Pavlova and Jasper (together) next, attended by Lady Yvonne and Man-o’-Belle. Gaza Lady Yvonne, Pavlova and Jasper was how they turned for home, but the pacemaker collapsed with the pressure on, and although Lady Yvonne looked a winner at the distance, Pavlova came with a well sustained run to secure the verdict by three-parts of a length. Gaza was half a length away third, and following came Margaret Wallace, Jasper and Man-o’-Belle. Hot Springs Handicap Mountain Princess £4Bl, Dealer £302 carried the money in the Hot Springs Handicap, while Childe Audubon was not allowed to go out unsupported, carrying £ 170. Haerenga Pai was slow, Zealous and Mountain Princess leading past the stand from Childe Audubon, the rest of the field not being sighted. Going down the back Zealous, Mountain Princess and Childe Audubon were racing at intervals of two lengths, but passing the top Childe Audubon joined Mountain Princess and they were just behind Zealous at the turn. The last-named weakened in the run to the post, and in a desperate finish the judge failed to separate Mountain Princess and Childe Audubon. Zealous was two lengths, away third, and then followed Dealer, Our Nancy and Haerenga Pai. Waihou Handicap Akenehi, £615. was backed down to a short price in the two-mile trot. Paradigm, £329, receiving most support of the others. Peterson, who beat the latter narrowly for second place, carried only £lO9. Lord Haldane refused to trot away at the start and Togo’s Promise led across the top from Te Ngutu, Paradigm and Joy Ride. Akenehi was making up her ground Quickly and when the stand was reached was ip behind Togo’s Promise. Before reaching the mile post J. T. Paul was in the van, her nearest attendants being Togo’s Promise, Peterson, Anseline and Paradigm. Akenehi was still well clear three furlongs from home, Peterson, Anseline, Paradigm. Togo’s Promise. Wild Nut and Sebisca following in close order. The favourite came round the final bend two lengths in advance of Paradigm, with Peterson a similar distance back, pursued by Anseline and Sebisca. The grey went on to win nicely by two lengths, and in a hard battle Peterson got up to defeat Paradigm by half a length for second prize. Then came Anseline. Sebisca, Togo’s Promise and Wild Nut. Farewell Handicap Rolfe Audubon £707 was the chief fancy for the final event, with Hohoro £360 next in demand. There was also support for Kingsclere £213 and Dad’s Hope £177. Several refused to strike a correct gait when the tapes
were released, including the. favourite, while Hohoro was also slow away. Old Iluon Grattan showed how early pace should be collected and hopped out, followed by Gold Cast, Kingsclere, Childe Audubon and Dad’s Hope. Before they reached the top, Kingsclere was in the van from Iluon Grattan, Gold Cast, Dad’s Hope, Hohoro and Childe Audubon, and as the final bend was negotiated Hohoro had dashed up to Huon Grattan, the pair following Kingsclere. Hohoro broke badly,
while Huon Grattan stopped, and Dad's Hope went after Kingsclere. but failed by two lengths to overhaul T. Grimrnond’s pacer. A length away came Childe Audubon, followed by Hohoro, Gold Cast, Andover and Brutus. Results: WAITOA HANDICAP (Harness) Of £100; li miles; limit 3.3 S 1— SOME DILLON (T. P.
