WRACKLER’S GOLD CUP
WELLINGTON TROTTING CLUB’S FIXTURE BIG “TOTE” INCREASE Special to I'HE SUN WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington Trotting C>ub staged a most successful fixture at Hutt Park today in fine weather and before a large attendance. The crack four-year-old Wrackler put up a splendid performance in winning the Gold Cup. Totalisator investments showed speculation to be keen, the sum of £40,701 being put through the machine, compared with £29,994 on the corresponding day last year. This represents a substantial increase of £10,707. The racing was interesting throughout, but a strong cross wind, together with the loose footing of the new track, was against fast times being recorded. After the judge hoisted the numbers in the Novice Dash Handicap there was a demonstration from a certain section of the crowd, which considered Petronius had beaten Harold Lee. Dipnoi, which finished third in the Progressive Trot, was subsequently disqualified for galloping, and All Peters placed third. W. Barron, driver of Dipnoi, was fined £2. A review of the racing follows: Probationers* Handicap Lydia was made favourite for the opening event, but she never got within range of Brent Zolock o'er the last mile, after being a bit slow away, and was beaten into fourth place. When Brent Zolock took up tie ead from Great De Oro, Automatic, Driftwave, Ayrmont Chimes and Lydia, with six furlongs gone, he set a lively pace for the remainder of the journey, and maintained his dash to the point of beating Automatic by 24 lengths, with Great De Oro finishing fast in third place. Brent Zolock was challenged by Automatic, a Rey De Oro three-year-old hailing from C. S. Donald's stable, but the latter raced greenly, and went to a wobble near the post, being lucky to beat Great De Oro in a spirited tussle for the other dividend. Ayrmont Chimes was third at three furlongs, where he was brought on the outside of Automatic for a run. but he faded out badly in the lane and finished fifth. Llewellyn lost ground at the start and never looked dangerous. Lady Author raced well, finishing in sixth place. Kaitoke Handicap From a public aspect the Kaitoke Handicap was a very disappointing race, although a splendid finish resulted. The well-backed Taraahine and Writer ruined their chances through faulting, the former with three furlongs gone, and Writer when he held a good position half a mile from home. Repute was also doing a gallop early in *the piece, and had Ukulele Lady kept to her feet for the concluding furlong, she would have won easily. Tot Logan led practically throughout, and after leading into the straight from Bright Light, she came away from him when required, and Ukulele Lady, with a gallant run, got up to take second place. She was a certainty beaten, but Tot Logan trotted solidly throughout, and deserved to win. Of the others Dipnoi, Lady Fan and Repute did best. N.Z. Gold Cup Wrackler was regarded in some quarters as a tough proposition for the New Zealand Gold Cup, but ne was fortunate in that Concliff broke near the post, when he appeared to have the race in safe keeping, allowing Wrackler to get up and beat him by two lengths. It was unfortunate that the track was the undoing of several horses, including Dundas Boy, who broke soon after entering the straight, and Quality, who became unbalanced a little farther on. Concliff and Quality would both have troubled the winner with an even passage. Wrackler was installed a good favourite, carrying £1,216, while Dilworth £976 10s, Dundas Boy £ 944, and Concliff £789 were also well backed. At the signal Logan Chief hopped out smartly but Dilworth went out faster, and piloted Concliff, Wrackler, Logan Chief, Daphne De Oro, Dundas Boy, Quality, King Pointer and Padlock past the stand the first time. Dundas Boy went out to make up some of his leeway in the back stretch, and when Dilworth led past the stand for the final round from Concliff, he was in third place on the outside, just in front of Wrackler, with Logan Chief, Quality, Daphne De Oro, King Pointer and Padlock following. Wrackler and Dundas Boy moved up to Dilworth and Concliff in the back, but Dundas Boy was not making much impression. When heads were turned for home Dilworth called enough, and Concliff forged to the front from Wrackler, Daphne De Oro, Quality and Dundas Boy. Then things happened, Quality and Dundas Boy breaking, the latter nearly falling, and Concliff left his feet, to allow Wrackler the verdict by two lengths. Quality recovered and finished third, two lengths away. Logan Chief, Daphne De Oro, Dilworth and Padlock were next to arrive. Wrackler proved himself the best four-year-old ever seen in this country in winning from a 4.26 mark. Dilworth was done with a long way from the post. King Pointer showed no dash, and Padlock never looked like a winner. Logan Chief and Daphne De Oro found the opposition too solid, but the latter is on the improve. Improvers’ Handicap Wrackeen won her first race when she led the Improvers’ Handicap field home. She was rushed to the lead early, but was soon eased to allow Logan’s Pride, Wakefield and Black Wattle to carry on the pacemaking. When required Wrackeen walked all over the opposition, to score by two lengths from the Taranaki-trained mare Queen Elizabeth, who finished very fast to cut Wakefield out of the other dividend. Morning Sun did better than Logan’s Pride and Black Wattle. It was a most impressive performance on the part of Wrackeen, and she was a class above the others. Novice Dash Handicap When the judge gave Harold Lee the verdict over Petronius, in the Novice Dash Handicap, there was a prolonged demonstration of disapproval from a section of the crowd. It appeared that Petronius, with a great finishing run, got up on the extreme outside to head Harold Lee, but it must be stated in fairness to the judge that the angle was a bad one. At any rate the dividend payers were too good for Silverwood, the favourite, Royal Iroquois and Driftwave, who were prominent at the lane entrance. Silverwood lost ground at the start, and in running for a position took a lot out of herself. Harold Lee is a useful sprinter by Waverley. and Petronius is by Nelson Bingen, from Cameos, dam of Onyx. Progressive Trotters’ Handicap Bonetta made a game effort to win the two-mile trot, but when fighting out the issue with Jock Bingen in the home stretch, she left her feet, and Jock Bingen went on to score nicely. In third place was Dipnoi, who broke repeatedly and galloped most of the journey. Miss Leda gave a wretched display, and Ukulele Lady lost a lot of ground early in the piece. All Peters trotted well into fourth place. Apart from the faultless exhibition of the winner, there was little to afford comment. Dipnoi was disqualified, and All Peters placed third. Gracefield Handicap Although Shady Spot was rapidly overhauling Ngingongingo at the finish of the Gracefield Handicap, It is seldom that a three-year-old has displayed such stamina as did the Matchlight colt, and the fact that he had a lot of ground to make up over the last
half, added to the merit of hi« « performance. Robert Guy went to win all the way. but he comco badly three furlongs from the Kautonia was a I wavs in the line but was well beaten real business was required. ran a real good race and mav « soon.
