Hakanoa's Good Win In Waipapakauri Cup
WAIPAPAKAURI, Saturday. The forty-second annual meeting of the Waipapakauri Racing Club was held today in glorious weather, there being a very large attendance. The course with its long straight was in good order. This was the first meeting staged at home by the Waipapakauri Club since it secured its totalizator permit, and it marked a further advancement of the sport in the Far .North. For the day the totalisator staff handled the sum of £5,001. Maiden Plate Furore £177, Mineral £l3O, and Archanui £lls, were best backed in tha opening event, the Maiden Plate, and the first two paid the dividends. Furore hopped out smartly from Mineral, Indian Maid, North Boy, Kelso, Te Kone, and crossing the top Mineral and Furore were out clear from Archaniii,, North Boy and Indian Maid. Once in line Furore disposed of Mineral’s challenge and beat him by two lengths. North Boy was three lengths back, just in front of Archanui, who wa« going fast at the finish. The winner outclassed the opposition. Awanui Handicap Seven started in the Awanui Handicap, Frothblower £ 187, being a pronounced favourite, with Valquette £l4l, Exalted £124, Waning Light and Michael each £SB, at the head of the other quotations. A good start saw Michael in front at the end of the first furlong from Exalted, Frothblower, Valquette, Fiery Lad and Waning Light, and at the half-mile Frothblower and Michael were making play from Exalted, Valquette, Fiery Lad and Waning Light, but crossing the top Exalted ran through and piloted Frothblower, Valquette, Fiery Lad and Waning Light into the home stretch. Half-way up the running Frothblower and Fiery Lad were fighting it out with Exalted, when Waning Light made her effort and finished strongly. She got up to win by three parts of a length from Frothblower, who was half a length in front of Valqustte. Right up fourth was Fiery L*cL, and Exalted headed the remainder. Waipapakauri Cup Six contested the Waipapakauri Cup, and in a fair pool Glena Bay £272, and Hakanoa £255, carried over half the machine, with a drop to Partial Eclipse £164. A good start was effected. The Thorn and Hakanoa leading along the straight and round the bend from Partial Eclipse. Glena Bay, Alloy and Right and Left. Down the back The Thorn had a slight advantage over Hakanoa. with a gap back to Partial Eclipse. Right and Left, Glena Bay and Alloy. Hakanoa led across the top and into the straight, where The Thorn, Partial Eclipse and Glena Bay were right up, and Alloy and Right and Left tailing off. At the half-distance Glena Bay was on terms with Hakanoa, but the latter had something in hand, and forged ahead to win by a length from Glena Bay. A length and a-half away was Partial Eclipse, and there was daylight back to The Thorn and Alloy. The winner was ridden a very confident race by H. Goldfinch, and his tactics ensured a truly run race. Kaitaia Handicap Waning Light brought off a nice double when she captured the Kaitaia Handicap, for which both she and Furore, early winners, were penalised 71b. Lightwood, £2lB, was a surprise first fancy, with Sunny Morn, £203, Waning Light, £129, and Furore, £lO5, fairly well supported. Furore and Sunny Morn were the first to begin, leading out from Waning Light, Brandy, Lightwood, and North Boy. Furore and Sunny Morn were still clear crossing the top, and they turned for home ahead of North Boy, Lightwood, and Waning Light. Actually on the turn the tired leaders swung out a bit, but they were still clear at the distance, with Waning Light going well on the rails. In a great finish Waning Light got up to win by a head from. Furore, who was only a head in front of Sunny Morn. North Boy, was three parts of a length away next. Lightwood headed the remainder. Flying Handicap British King never left the sprint in doubt. The fact that he was having his first race for some time did not deter backers from making him a w.arm favourite with £252, Macroom, £163, and Ned Kelly, £124, being the only others considered. Partial Eclipse, who was sore after her cup outing earlier in the day. got chopped out just after the start, when the order
was British King, Valquette, Ned Kelly, Macroom, and Frothblower. Valquette took charge at the half-mile, being followed by Ned Kelly, British King, Macroom, and Partial Eclipse. Crossing the top, Valquette and Ned Kelly were together, with British King coming round the bend. Macroom and Frothblower were both handy. British King hit the front as soon as they had straightened up, and he went on to win by two lengths from Macroom, who was half a length in front of Partial Eclipse and Ned Kelly, who dead-heated, for third. Valquette and Frothblower were well back. The winned registered an attractive performance. Beach High-weight Glena Bay, having his fourth start on the northern circuit, won the Beach High-weight Handicap, for which he was an exceedingly hot favourite. He carried £279, Royal Day, £143, being second choice. The latter set a solid pace, and led ail the way to the home turn, where Glena Bay and Fiery Led were up with him. At the distance Glena Bay passed the pacemaker, and went on to win by two lengths, Royal Day being half a length in front of Fiery Lad, with Exalted fourth. Evans Memorial Handicap Hakanoa, with 10.6 up, was favourite, with £270, in the Evans Memorial Handicap, Macroom carrying £239, and Sunny Morn £59. Sunny Morn Jumped out clear of Ned Kelly, The Thorn, Owairaka, Hakanoa, and Macroom, and along the back and into the straight Sunny Morn was still forcing the pace, attended by Ned Kelly, Owairaka, Macroom, The Thorn, and Hakanoa. Right to inside the distance Sunny Morn was still clear, but then Macroom challenged, and beat the outsider by half a length. Ned Kelly was a similar distance away third, and next were Hakanoa, Owairaka, and The Thorn. Results were:— MAIDEN PLATE Of £65: 6 fur. ’ Ft ®- s * Goldfinch 1 J - Cammick .... 2 ♦—NORTH BOY, 8.0, W.
