FOR SILVER SASH
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP TONIGHT WESTERN SPRINGS STADIUM The first of a series of races for the Auckland Championship and Silver Sash will be staged at Western Springs ; Speedway this evening, the title to be held and defended by the best of six riders who will compete in two heats, the first in each heat going into the j final. The third man in the final will be the winner of a race between the second men in each heat and the third man making the fastest time. Lionel Van Pragg and Harry Maugham, the Australian riders who have been demonstrating their skill on the track to the great satisfaction of the crowd, will meet in a special match race. Mangham will also make an attempt on the lap record, and Van Pragg will endeavour to establish a new record for the mile. In addition there will be races in the Open Handicap and Improvers’ Handicap. The track is now in very good condition, and it is expected that some of the leading riders will establish new times. Van Pragg is believed to have an excellent chance of lowering the times registered by Kilminster when the Wellington rider was in Auckland. The best of the local riders will be seen in competition in the Auckland Championship and in the Open Handicap they will be opposed by the Australians. The improvers, too, should provide good races. The programme is excellent and some fine performances should be witnessed. _
