PUBLIC GRATITUDE
PRESENTATIONS TO CAPTAIN OF TUATEA LONG SERVICE WITHOUT ACCIDENT Press Association GISBORNE, Today. During his 25 years’ service in charge of the Union Steam Ship Company’s lighter Tuatea, which until a few years ago transferred passengers from the Gisborne wharves to steamers in the roadstead, Captain J. H. Hawkes has transported more than 300,000 passengers and has not had one single mishap. Owing to improved harbour conditions the Tuatea was removed from the service, taken to Auckland, and later sold by the company, and Captain Hawkes retired. Today Captain Hawkes was met by a large and representative gathering of citizens, heads of local bodies and prominent country residents, and presented with an illuminated address and a well-filled wallet. A number of speakers made eulogistic remarks on the invaluable work done by Captain Hawkes and the deep debt owed to him by the travelling public. Captain Hawkes suitably responded.
