DIET “CURE"
OSTEOPATH CENSURED bV JURY EXPERT’S EVIDENCE 'Apple* Toast pears Whito of eggs Spinach Water —i ot a Celery pint a day The aboTe diet sheet, alleged to hare been suggested to a patient by an osteopath, was criticised by Sir Bernard Spilsbury, the Home Office pathologist, in giving evidence at the resumed inquest at Southend on Mr. Frank Ferry, who died after dieting and manipulative treatment. Mr. Perry was 72, and lived at Hadleigh Road, Leigh. He had not been attended by a medical man, but by an osteopath. The treatment had lasted eight months, and a son said a cure was guaranteed. The diet as represented by the diet sheet, said Sir Bernard, would be quite Inadequate to maintain the strength of any individual. The cause of death was syncope due to acute pneumonia, and accelerby insufficient food. The osteopath said that the treatment was appropriate manipulation, gentle physical exercises, breathing exercises and dieting. He described the diet, which he said at first included minced beef or mutton three times a day, plus toast and prunes for breakfast. Perry, he added, was prone to over eating. He had an abnormal appetite. Returning a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, the jurycensured the osteopath for the manner in which he had carried out his diet "cure.” The coroner told the man that the jury had taken a merciful view. The censure was deserved and he hoped it would be a warning to him.
