‘THE COLLEGE COQUETTE’' On© of the breeziest and brightest ► fcories of American college life ever screened is “The College Co<juette,” the main talkie attraction now at both ihe Roxy Theatre, Queen Street, and at the Crvatal Palace Theatre, Mount Uden Road. “The College Coquette” abounds in scenes of youth, sport and romance that makes this type of picture so popular. Jobyna Ralston and William Collier, junr. are the stars. It is an all-talkie. All the incidents that linger in the memory long after graduation and serve to make college days the happiest in a person's whole iif© have been caught by the c amera. The thrill of the foot >all skirmish, the cheering for the home team, the practice matches, the training ; n the gym. the fellow who got peeved" with his chum for cutting in on him when he was dancing with his best girl, and the initiation into tho mysteries of college life and the various societies are included as backgrounds for an appealing cirama of the friendship of two girls and the boys they each admire. At the Roxy Theatre a second feature is shown in “Kather and Son.” a powerful talkie drama starring Jack Holt. At the Crystal Palace Theatre the second feature is “Under the Southern «’ross,” the Maori-made film of an old Maori legend.
LABOUR PARTY PICNIC The combined Auckland branches of the New Zealand Labour Party will hold their annual picnic at Pine Island tomorrow. There will be competitions and tho sports programme, with good prizes. Hot water and milk will be provided free. BAND AT ZOO TOMORROW The Municipal Band will play at the Zoological Park on Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The fine programme to be presented includes the overture Pique Dame,’’ the tuneful suite ‘ Italians,” the popular pot-pourri * Tangled Tunes," selection “H.M.S. Pinafore.’’ serenades “Les Millions d Ariequin” and "At My Window,” together with bright marches and hymn Junes. The band will play in Albert Park in the evening at 8.30, when the programme will include ‘•Martha." overture, selection "The Yeomen of the Guard.” suite "At the Courts of Granada,” waltz-intermezzo "Beethoven Kchoes" and other popular numbers. THEATRICAL PICNIC V very pleasant time is promised at the combined theatrical picnic to be held at Motutapu Island on Sunday week. Every arrangement is being made for a successful outing, and fuller details will be announced later.
