CLEARING NOXIOUS WEEDS
MINISTER’S STRAIGHT TALK From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Friday. During the visit of the Minister of Lands, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, to the Ohura district, he was approached at Matiere in regard to the suppression of the blackberry nuisance. Later, speaking on this subject at Ohura, Mr. Forbes contended that the settlers themselves should eradicate the nuisance. He stated that if the noxious weeds inspectors were too persistent in serving notices on settlers regarding the clearing of noxious weeds, the settlers usually wrote to the department and asked for the removal of tho inspectors from the district. Rabbits at one time had increased in great numbers in the south, but eventually the settlers took the position in their own hands and eradicated the pest. If the land was worth occupying it was worth clearing of weeds. Mr. L. Fauchelle said that many settlers took no notice of requests to clear the weeds off, and the Minister agreed that it was a hard tiling to get a conviction.
