A particularly interesting feature of a recent Hawke Cup cricket match between Nelson and Marlborough, at Nelson, was the fact that two former Canterbury and New Zealand representative Rugby footballers were wicketkeepers for the opposing teams. M. E. (“Morry”) Wood, on the left in this photograph, kept wickets for Marlborough. One of the best Rugby fiveeighths in the country in his day, Wood represented Canterbury in 1902-3, and Wellington and Auckland in other years. He played for New Zealand in the New Zealand Rugby team which toured the British Isles and France in 1901, 1903 and 1904. J. H. Parker, on the right, now lives in Nelson. An old boy of Chirstchurch Boys’ High School, he represented Canterbury in 1920 and 1923, and as a wing-forward was one of the most prominent players in 1924-25.
