Labour Government Stands Firm MEN’S CONFERENCE DEFIED Heavy Fines For Rioters rE Federal Prime Minister, Mr. J. H. Scullin, has announced the Government’s refusal to carry out the decision of the Labour conference held at Sydney yesterday. Mr. Scullin added that it. in defiance of the Constitution, the forces of the Commonwealth were arrayed against the State, a police clash would he unavoidable, and civil war would be precipitated. Eleven men were charged with at- ! tempting to pull up the Rothbury col- j liery railway line during the riots on I December 16. Each was fined £lO, in default two months in gaol. Seven miners narrowly escaped death at the West Greta colliery, on the Maitland field. The men were working at No. 4 level, when a sudden inrush ot deadly gas fumes enveloped them. Choking and gasping, they staggered through the darkness toward the entrance of the level, on the verge of collapse.
They were there found, and dragged to safety. One man was seriously affected. CASE IN THE COURT j NEW PLAINT FROM THE MEN MELBOURNE, Thursday. In the Arbitration Court today Mr. Justice Beeby dealt with a new plaint filed by the Miners’ Federation. His Honour held that there was a serious inter state dispute extending beyond the limits of one State and ordered that the hearing of the case should be begun at Sydney on February 18.
