Wrackler Will Be Favourite for Gold Cup
Speed Merchants Are Engaged in Main Events TROTTING AT HUTT PARK A good programme of light harness events, with the New Zealand Gold Cup as the chief feature, will be unfurled at Hutt Park tomorrow, when the Wellington Trotting Club presents another of its one-day fixtures. Of the four functions promoted annually by the Empire City trotting organisation, the January one is considered on all sides the most important. For many seasons past the Gold Cup lias attracted a good deal of attention, but never has so keen an interest been manifested in its decision as at the present juncture. This has undoubtedly been caused by the tightening of the limit to 4.27, a point longer than the New Zealand Cup. The enterprise on the part of the management has resulted in a high-class field being billed to appear tomorrow, and a dozen pacers, representative of the best in the Dominion, will fight out the issue. . A shorter event of corresponding importance from a time limit, has also enticed the cracks to take part, and the Despatch Handicap will furnish a real speed test. Six other items of interest to followers of the popular pastime colour the line card, and with large fields engaged there should be many good contests. A review of the card by “Abaydos” follows. PROBATIONERS' HANDICAP Of £175; 3.59 limit; 1 mile 5 furlongs Automatic . . Ut Solitude .... Lt. Ayrmont Wild Goose . . Lt Chimes . . Lt Mary Brown . Lt Brent Zolock . Lt Novices are well represented on the front of this event, of which Ayrmont Chimes and Morrison may appeal most. Great de Oro and Marion de Oro represent a good strain, while Matenga and Mary Brown are old hands at the business. Llewellyn will bo given a chance to make amends for his dis-
appointing efforts, while Lydia and Silverwood are a pair with some form as a recommendation. Ayrmont Chimes and Silverwood will be in demand, and should either be missing Llewellyn will have many friends. KAITOKE HANDICAP (Trotters) Of £200; 3.52 limit; 1 mile 5 furlonsrs Boneta Lt Writer .... 12 Bright Light . Lt Dipnoi .... 36 Repute .... Lt Ukulele Lady . 36 Tamahine ... Lt Lady Fan ... 60 Tot Logan . . Lt There is a useful field of straightout trotters engaged here, but nearly all claim an engagement later in the day. Form in. this heat will be worth considering when the two-mile trot comes up for decision. If Bright Light is in his best form he will give the opposition something to do over this journey, and Tamahine and Tot Logan are a useful pair. Writer is well placed and sure to cause trouble to his rivals. Ukulele Lady, Dipnoi and Lady Fan are capable of making things decidedly interesting. Writer and Tamahine ma.y be fancied, but Bright Light will not be neglected. NEW ZEALAND GOLD TROTTING CUP Of £750; 4.27 limit; 2 miles Concliffe .... Prince Dilvvortli ... 12 Pointer ... 48 Dundas Boy . . 12 Padlock .... 60 Wrackler ... 12 The field engaged in the principal event is of a high standard and the race should bo one of the best ever seen at Hutt Park. Of the quartet on the limit, recent form suggests Concliff as the most likely to cause serious trouble to the cracks behind him. He is a bold pacer when right and as he appears to be going more solid must be considered. King Pointer has not been seen at his best for some time, but if in order he will make things interesting. A splendid trio comes in on the next mark, Dilwortli, Dundas Boy and Wrackler, and they will take all sorts of beating. On a firm track Dilworth is sure to go well, while Wrackler will be a hard horse to dispose of. Roi L’Or is in splendid condition for the fray, while Terence Dillon and Padlock will also be in the picture. In a great betting race the order may be Wrackler, Concliff and Roi L’Or. IMPROVERS’ HANDICAP Of £200; 3.48 class; 1 mile 5 furlongs Logan’s Wakefield . . . Lt Pride .... Lt Wrackeen . . Lt Native Hero . Lt Black Wattle . 12 Robert Guy . Lt Ricardo .... 24 Shady Spot . Lt Hostess .... 36 Queen Morning Sun . 36 Elizabeth . . Lt Zella 60 A well-balanced field of improving pacers will be seen in action on this occasion. If Native Hero is in his best form the others will find their task difficult. Robert Guy is a useful sort and Queen Elizabeth and Wrackeen represent possibilities. Newcomers in Howdah, Petronius and Royal Iroquois, Roldena. and Reylet will keep Ayrxnont Chimes, Silverxvood and company busy. If Silverwood or Ayrmont Chimes escape a penalty they will be in most demand, but if either is absent Royal Iroquois may be sought after. Jock Bingen, All Peters and VVi-iter are recent winners, and
their form will bo worthy of consideration. Dipnoi likes the long journey, and Ukulele Lady and Lady Fan are a pair to be reckoned with. Favourites may bo AI! Peters and Lady Fan, with support for Tot Logan if the back marker is absent. GRACEFIELD HANDICAP Of £250; limit 4.42; 2 miles Kautoma . . . Li Ngingo Ngingo 12 Robert Guy . . Lt Hostess .... 36 Shady Spot . . Lt Ricardo .... 36 Black Wattle . 12 Morning Sun 48 Hilltop .... 12 Zella . .... 60 Mac De Oro . 12 This heat will give stayers a chance, and Robert Guy may be at home more than his limit associates. Hilltop is useful and a recent winner over this course, while Black "Wattle is consistent. Then there is the three-year-old Ngingo Ngingo, who is nicely placed and will give his older rivals a lot of cheek. Hostess is a great little stayer and Zella is a good class mare. Ngingo Ngingo, Hilltop and Hostess (if reserved) will have most friends. DESPATCH HANDICAP Of £300; limit 2.45; 11 miles Athalone . . . Lt Dilworth ...» 24 The Shrew . Lt Dundas Boy . . 24 Imprint .... 12 Kingscraft ... 24 Quality .... 12 Wrackler ... 24 Bessie Logan . 12 Terence Bonny Logan . 24 Dillon .... 3b Concliff .... Prince Pointer 48 Hero come the speed merchants again Most of this lot will be seen out in the Cup and those finishing close to the winner will be worth consideration in the shorter event. Fresh blood in Athalone, Bessie Logan and Kingcraft will offer strenuous opposition to the Cup candidates, and with an even break the last mentioned will take a power of beating. Fancies may lean toward Athalone, Kingcraft and Bessie Logan, with solid support for placed Cup candidates.
