JOTTINGS FROM TE AROHA
G. REID’S TEAM INCREASED INDOLENT BACK TO A. COX Special to THE SUN After a paddock holiday l'or several weeks Bert FLinkler has again been put into work by C. Mallowes, and will be trained in company with Master Latour. The Quin Abbey gelding has been up in condition and so may be among the starters at Matamata. When he settles down steadily to his work this Bert Flinkler will win a stake or two, because he is sound, and has both pace and jumping ability. Hitherto a very sound horse, and doing really good track work, Trig developed lameness a few days ago at the back of the near knee. On Tuesday he was sent back to his owner at Ngaruawahia for the purpose of being spelled. The occurrence is somewhat unfortunate for G. Reid, who was always optimistic of the ability of the King Nassau gelding. Glenstar is still doing track tasks of a consistent character, and should soon be right to show up” more in keeping with his last season’s form. On Saturday morning he was schooled over jumps, and took to the work kindly. It may be that he will follow in the footsteps of other Hay Comets which have made a name over fences. In At Matamata Te Aroha will be represented at Matamata by Grand Arch, The Lamb, Master Latour, St. Warrigal, Albyn, Te Apurangi, Taumai, Intaglio, Crown Arch, Leasehold, Glenison and Lucky Alice. If able to resume track work next week other competitors will be The Lamb and Ah Wera. The name of G. A. Reid as a successful trainer is known even in the South Island. This was illustrated this week when an addition to his team was made in the shape of a very nicely Set up bay yearling filly by the Phalaris horse, Shambles, from Pitbrow Lass, owned by Mr. J. H. Grigg, of Longbeach. This filly is a typical thoroughbred as regards quality, is well grown, good bone and very nice action. She has taken to her new home in a very contented way, and in appearance will soon be worth seeing even by the most critical judges. In an adjoining* box is a yearling by Acre—Lady Sykes, and with the Acre-Elinore two-year-old Leasehold doing satisfactory work, the stable is well off as regards juveniles. May be a Bargain At the Trentham sales this week the Chief Ruler —Renella colt bred by Dunn Bros., Waihou,* fell to the bid of Mr. Barton, of Dunedin, at 500gns. Being closely related to Flying Juliet, The Begum and Supremacy the purchaser may have secured a bargain. W. R. Hines, of Mountain View Stud, has again put King Win and Balfour into work. They both look really well, and judging by their training work may shape well during the autumn months. Two equines in A. Cox’s string that are doing well are Glenison and Kanui. The latter, owned by a Matamata sportsman, is filling out into a more shapely customer than was expected, and gets over the ground in good style. Indolent, by General Latour—White Sox, is back again to this stable, where during the rest of the season he should do well. Mr. Alex. Swney, of Waihou, is still keeping Taumai. Volimond and Honiton in active commission. The last-named pair were taken to Takapuna this week, but Taumai may not be started until the Matamata meeting. He is looking all the better for his Thames racing. On the plough yesterday good work was done by Leasehold, Te Apurangi, Terrapeen. Crown Arch, Miss Albyn, Glenison, Taumai and the Hay Comet —Poi two-year-old Lucky Alice and Sir Russell sprinted over five furlongs in 1.4 2-ssec, the latter being a neck in front at the post. Glenstar slipped over a mile in a workmanlike manner, and Indolent was sent a round at a little better than half-pace. King Win was associated with Balfour over five furlongs, the last two taking 26 2-ssec. The King Lu was slightly in front at the finish.
