FOR OVERSEAS TRADE
PLEA ON BEHALF OF BAY OF ISLANDS Special to THE SUN RUSSELL, Wednesday. The recognition of the Bay of Islands as a port of entry for overseas vessels was urged at a meeting of the Keri Keri-Waipapa branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. A resolution said the branch held the view that the birthright of the Bay of Islands was the use of its excellent facilities for overseas trade. The duty of public bodies served by the harbour was to fight for recognition of the right by the Government. The Bay of Islands was the earliest port of New Zealand. Overseas vessels called now for exports and the branch could not agree with the Government’s opinion that, in these days of wireless and rapid transit, the cost of maintaining a Customs officer was too high. Increased general trade due to cheaper fertilisers alone would warrant more than the cost of sending an officer from Auckland to meet an occasional vessel.
