RETURNING ON NIAGARA
HELENSVILLE LAND AGENT BACK FROM AMERICA CHARGES DISMISSED Two passengers on the Niagara, which reaches Auckland on Monday, are Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Crouch, of Helensville. Mr. Crouch is better known as John Grey. He and his wife are returning from a trip to Texas. The arrest of John Grey, the Helensville land agent, on September 24 last year caused a sensation. He had been wanted by the police of Texas for 13 years on charges of forgery involving some thousands of dollars. The warrant was first issued on February 6, 1917. Mr. Crouch was taken back to Texas, but a cable message received on January 11 stated that “the 13 indictments against A. B. Crouch, known in New Zealand as John Grey,” had been dismissed. The message also stated that Mr. Crouch had made restitution and that the attorney of the City % National Bank, the heaviest loser among several Temple, Texas, institutions involved, asked for a dismissal of the charges. Mr. Crouch gave a bond of £6,000 immediately on his return to Temple. He was accompanied on the trip by Mr. J. J. K. Terry, an Auckland solicitor. It is presumed that when Mr. Crouch returns to Helensville ha will resume his proper name.
