“CYCLOS."
THE AMATEURS A change in the locale of the midweek races saw the members of the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club stage a two-mile senior and a half-mile junior handicap on the Domain. A mile handicap under the jurisdiction of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club saw a few of the riders, who did not link up with the former club, in the recent "breakaway,” competing in the first race under the new cond “tons. * * v The first event decided, that of the Auckland Club, resulted in a victory tor the ex-Auckland champion, Mai. Byrnes, who started from scratch. He showed to advantage in a weak field. It will be interesting when the New Zealand championships are held to see how this rider will stand in regard to representing Auckland, in view of other prominent riders being linked up with the "breakaway” movement. The juniors of the Manukau Club took charge of the circuit for their half-mile, when the athletic body had concluded its events. In this race C. Oxton (50yds> showed a first burst of speed over the final stages to beat K. Hellier, a most consistent performer, by two lengths. C. Beart, winner of the three-lap junior race on the Springs last Wednesday fortnight, was a creditable third. An overdue win came the way of AV. McCallum. This pedaller has been a. consistent starter throughout the season. That his victory was wellearned is shown by the congratulations from Ins club mates. E. Avery followed up his Papatoetoe successes with a close second. He was in front for a while and looked a winner, but McCallum plodded away steadily, to defeat him in the run home. Avery has now struck form. He will be hard in future races, provided, of course, he is not too severely penalised. Another outsider in 11. Cribble was in third berth. A new member, he should soon salute the judge. He did a bit more work than he did when he was second to J. Leather recently on the banked circuit. Results of last evening's races were: Two-mile Handicap.—AV. McCallum (300yds), 1: E. Avery (160yds), 2; H. Cribble (260yds), 3. Time, 5.11 3-5. Half-mile Junior Handicap.—L. Oxton (50yds). 1: K. Hellier (40vds). 2: C. Beart (30yds). 3. Time, 1.17.
THE CASH RIDERS No race was held last evening by the Auckland Cycle Club, the olhcials holding that a spell would do the members good, in view of the carnival to be held on Saturday at Sturge’s Park, Otahuhu. After the big programme staged on the 16th, cyclists were glad of the respite. # The entries received for Saturday are practically the same as those which were received for the Opperman carnival. Times will not be as fast, but some good racing should be witnessed. The track is in excellent order, a number of enthusiasts having spent much time in rolling out the course. With the same energetic committee, arrangements should go along admirably. # The star performer will perhaps be J. Harcourt. He is standing up some good starts. However, he is at home on the grass as well as the banked circuit, and should make his presence felt. The middle-markers will have to work together to keep him away. Once he reaches them he should certainly be a winner. It is a long time since S. Hayes started off a handicap of 40yds This he did last Thursday evening. He showed a clean pair of heels over the final sprint to gain his first win on the track this season. Hitherto he has not been able to get within striking distance of his field. Should he retain this form he will not be long away from his original mark. O. Stace. of Te Aroha, was in the money on three occasions last Thursday. He had a win, second and third, placed on liis performance-sheet. Each time he came from behind to be with the finalists. Stace was only half a wheel off winning a double when he was downed in the 10-lap professional handicap. He has two recent victories over the well-known cyclist. Sid McCann, of New Plymouth.
