FEELINGS OF PLANTS
REQUIRE TO BE PROTECTED Plants should be pruned only between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. as it has been proved that the most sensitive varieties undergo a period o£ inactivity between those hours. This had been discovered by .Sir J. Chunder Bose, of the Bose Institute, Calcutta, stated Mr. W. H. Rice, during- the course of an address on “The Hygiene of the Garden,” at St. Sepulchre's Hall last evening. The address was given under the auspices of the Auckland Chrysanthemum Club and the Auckland Gladiolus Society. This Indian scientist had demonstrated that plants were subject to shocks from rough handling and wounds, said the lecturer, who outlined the methods of cultivation of plants along scientific lines, the modes of preventing diseases and the necessity for cleanliness and sanitation. He drew parallels between the development of plant life and the growth of manhood. Plants required to be physically fit and protected from disease just as much as animal life. The beneficial effects of suitable plant foods, sunlight, and environment were also emphasised.
