TEAROH A TROTTING FIXTURE
Owners’ Liberal Response
PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF CARD
AS generally anticipated, the acceptances for the Te Aroha Trotting (Tub’s fixture, which eventuates on Saturday, tin-tv a most liberal rflesponse from owners who had candidates nominated for the meeting. The fields possess quality os well as quantity and the success of the function is already assured.
The fart that so many or those origm-ent.'i-ed have stood their ground iter acceptance day is a testimony to "he work o£ the handicapper, Mr. C. E. Gasman. whose adjustments have Keen most favourably commented upon n all sides. The slight detections from J’he final list have not been made through adverse handicapping, and the general result, reflected in the acceptances must be gratifying indeed to The Club and its capable official. Backers are set several stiff problems and tlie task, especially for prerJ«t and stay-at-home speculators, is rendered more difficult through so many horses having more than .me engagement Those who make investments on the day will not have much trouble in this respect, and the ■ first-up' form will act as a good cuide for later engagements, and will and to relieve the strain of solution in a certain extent. "Abaydos” appends a preliminary survey of the fields, and the final review will appear in Friday’s Sun. Waitoa Handicap A field of seventeen novice and improving pacers, with only three behind the front mark, will give speculators .something: to sort out. The draw for places at the barrier will play a prominent part, while ability to hop out quickly will be a big asset. Lady Linda and Deswood won at Ngaruawahia on Saturday, and the former should hold the latter safe. Gaza moves out -inartly. but fails to stay on, while Black Ball in can also go well up to a certain point. Jasper is not lacking in racing experience, and Margaret Wallace and Kewpie’s Guy are a likely pah*. If the former hops away she will trouble the opposition. Some Dillon's Carterton form will gain him heaps of friends, and ho should be decidedly troublesome. Gold Treasure may not be quite ready but Zealous must be labelled dangerous. The back-marker, Mountain Princess is a useful sort, and if she gets anything like a decent run will be handy at the post. Some Dillon, Mountain Princess. Zealous and Kewpte's Guy are a few that will be awarded solid support. Elstow Handicap There is a good number engaged in this heat for square-gaiters, with a motley lot off the limit. Some of them have to be taken on trust, but in this division there may be something “out of the box.’’ Black Magic is one of promise, and the three-year-old Wiriwhata, who is piaking his debut, will add interest to the contest. Roto would be a pest if he elected to leave the niark i-t the right time, and Peter Brown is overdue, and may find this society to his liking. Don Zoloclc will be suited by the journey, and if ready tor the fray will worry those in front of him. the b.-st of whom may perhaps be Te Ngutu, a possibility when travelling at the correct gait. The converted trotter, Lord Haldane, if he went away ut the trot, would be a nuisance, but he may commence pacing and lose ground. Togo’s promise should account for Paradigm at the distance, while old Lackiewood ir.s not out of the hunt. Possibilities are Don Zolock, Lord Haldane, Togo’s Promise and Lackiewood. Manawaru Handicap This event, which is a test of stamina, has drawn a handy field, in which la included a couple of useful trotters. Nothing appears on the limit, but Dealer on 12 yards, has Anselipe and Peterson beside him. If lie hits out promptly he may carry the trotters off their feet, making their task harder. Bertefiee has yet to show* she can get the long journey, but if the race is run to suit her she should be handy at the ♦ nd. Kingsclero does not appeal at the distance, and Dad’s Hope should do better in the saddle heat. Great Ball in might effect a surprise, although he will be preferred in the shorter race. Haerenga Pai will be in the picture, end Andover is probably the best stayer in the field. A quartet to be well fancied may be Dealer, Benefice, Haerenga Pai and Andover. Te Aroha Cup With 15 acceptors the field for the principal race will be the strongest both numerically and in point of class
that has ever stepped out a.t the Te Aroha track. And what is more, every hors© paid up for has a chance, and this will make the contest keen, spectacular and speculative. Peter Pirate on the end must be respected after his kpaom performance in October, but the promising pacer will be meeting better society on this occasion. His companion at this end of the handicap 13 Bawldy Locanda, and the old stager ' annot be counted out. In his last s *art at Epsom Bawldy finished fourth two miles, recording 4.36, and a ! repetition of that form would get him j s om© of the money. Lord Nepean is • v till a possibility, while Concertina, if in the right tune, would have a chance ; '»f securing her second Te Aroha Cup. j decent failures by Cornelian will not j keep her from being well supported, j ■nd Tony Victor should run a solid tw o miles. Explosion will appreciate the Te Aroha course and must be 1
marked dangerous, while Warspite’s recent form entitles him to the greatest respect. Hal Chimes, Goldman and Brutus are all solid stayers, and Joy Bird is capable of putting up a good light. Mountain Deli will be fancied best of those further back, but the main support may be for Peter Pirate, Cornelian, Warspite and Explosion. Ruakura Handicap Twenty-one, with sixteen off the front line, is the main in this event for novices and improvers. The field
is very similar to that in the opening race, and as far as those appearing in both heats are concerned, the form in the Waitoa Handicap will be a good guide for this contest. Position among the limit brigade will also be worth noticing. Jasper, Lady Yvonne, Gaza, Kewpie’s Guy and Margaret Wallace may do best of this section, but Some Dillon, Zealous and Pavlova are all very handy to them, and this trio will make the contest decidedly interesting. Mountain Princess is also on a handy mark and if those in front make any errors, she will be about at the business end. Kewpie’s Guy, Margaret Wallace, Some Dillon and Pavlova should be worth keeping in view. Hot Springs Handicap With the exception of Childe Audubon and Our Nancy the acceptors in this heat will all appear earlier in the day, when a good line should be gained on their Hot Springs prospects. A likely pair off the front will be Zealous and Mountain Princess, and should they escape an earlier penalty, those behind the front line are going to find their task somewhat difficult. Mountain Princess in particular will be a nuisance to the opposition. Black Ballin has given away time to be in this lot, and it will depend on his ! I ! : 1
showing in the opening event, what chance he can have here. Dealer is always a dangerous sort over any distance, and Childe Audubon, despite many failures, is a possibility. Haerenga Pai and Great Ballin must be seriously considered before it is all over, while Our Nancy may be .better suited in the mile saddle event. Mountain Princess and Zealous may find strong opposition from Haerenga Pai and Childe Audubon. Waihou Handicap This event will give the squaregaiters another opportunity to display their ability, and as the class engaged is of good calibre generally, the item should be brimful of interest. The front lot do not make a great appeal, but Lord Haldane’s form in the 12-fur-long trot should lend colour to his prospects on this occasion. Togo’s Promise is on a handy mark and if he trots in his best style, those behind him are going to have something to do to head him off. Paradigm is also entitled to respect, and if in his form of the spring would take a power of beating. Wild Nut is another that must claim attention, and he is certainly well overdue for a win. Of the trio on 96yds, Akenehi, providing she trotted solidly, would be the pick, as on her right day, she would beat Anseline and Peterson. Then there is the evergreen Sebisca, who will be going soundly when a lot of the others are getting short of breath. There will he support for Togo’s Promise, Paradigm, Akenehi, and Sebisca. Farewell Handicap The final heat of the day—the popular saddle item—will see another big field lino up and here again the race is full of possibilities and the dividendpayers well concealed. If Satinbird went right ho could probably clean up the issue off the end. but Gold Cast is more reliable and Childe Audubon will go a merry mile. There is a solid lot on the next mark, of which Andover, Hohoro, Silver Link and Dad’s Hope have all shown prominence with the weight on top. Rolfe Audubon is a new recruit to this style, and may prove a surprise shot. Ursuline and Our Nancy are both useful in saddle, and providing the former can be induced to do her best she will he a tough nut to crack. Warspite, Benefice and Goldman have earlier engagements, but if Benefice was reserved she would make it decidedly in*tcresting. Vanity Boy is a solid little chap at this style and business, and he will be handy at the finish. Dad’s Hope. Ursuline, Our Nancy and Benefice arc some that will not lack friends.
