Colt From Oratress Equals The Record

Big Prices For Yearlings

WELLINGTON. Tuesday. The fourth national sales of Now Zealand thoroughbred yearlings was held at Trentliam today. There was a large crowd present, including buyers lrom overseas, and several of the youngsters catalogued reached intlated prices. Much interest was centred in the Hunting Song—Oratress colt when he was brought into the ling, as a result of the brilliant achievements of his half-sister, Oratrix, winner of the New Zealand Cup, and half-brother, Concentrate, whose recent victories in the Auckland and Wellington Cups revealed that he is a high-class galloper and not short of weight-for-age form. The colt was keenly competed for. Mr. Ken Austin, who was in the rostrum, started off the colt at I,OOOgns, but a bid of 250gns was soon forthcoming. Then followed successive bids of 250gns, which brought the price up to 2,OOOgns. An Australian commissioner who was eager to purchase the colt then bid 2,300gn5, but not to be outdone, the Wellington sportsman, Mr. R. J. Murphy (owner of Concentrate and Oratrix) raised the price to 2,400gn5, at which figure he was knocked down. These figures equal the Dominion record price paid for Zetes at the sales last year. The remarkable success of the progeny of Chief Ruler caused keen competition for this imported stallion’s stock. When a brother to Tenterden (who won the Wellington Stakes on Saturday) was paraded he attracted much attention, but eventually he was purchased by Chisholm and Co., Sydney, who were acting on behalf of a Sydney buyer. The Canterbury sportsman, Mr. G. D. Greenwood, took a fancy to the Chief Ruler —Toiling Tessie colt, and he paid l,3oogns for him. This youngster is a fine-looking colt and should come to hand for early two-year-old racing. As he comes from the same family as Manfred, Positano, Martian and Boniform, his future career will be watched with much interest. Harry Telford. who has become famous "as the owner of Phar Lap, was active, and made several purchases. lie

l also bought, privately. Auda. who made a bold showing in the Wellington Stakes. Another youngster purchased ; by Mr. G. D. Greenwood was a filly by Chief Ruler from Baylock. a mare imported for the stud. He gave 550gns lor this filly, who comes from the same family as Tiffin, who was one of tho fastest fillies that ever raced in England and is bred on similar lines. Dr. M. G. Louisson gave 525gns for a black colt by Hunting Bong from Flagship, the dam of Nancy Lee, while he also purchased a filly by Chief Ruler from Baby Doll (a full sister to Royal Ruler). Auckland Buyers Mr. E. Cueksey, Auckland, the owner of the three-year-old Flying Prince, went to oOOgns to secure a brown colt by Weathervane from Tortrix (Martian —Tortulla). • The Takanini trainer, J. T. Jamieson, purchased the following youngsters: Bay colt by Pombal from Leta (the dam of Thespian) for 250gns, and a chestnut colt by Tea Tray from Philomela (dam of Francolin). for 400gns. Another Auckland sportsman, Mr. A. Coubrougli (owner of Prince Lu). pur- ; chased a Paper Money—Fleeting colt j for 340gns. A Chief Ruler —Penella colt, a half- j brother to Flying Juliet, submitted on j behalf of Messrs. W. W. and S. L. j Dunn, of Waihou. Te Aroha. went to ! Mr. G. J. Barton (owner of Gold Tinge and several trotters) for oOOgns. Mr. W. G. Butler (Auckland) went to 425gns to get the brown colt by Psychology Pourparler (Finland — Gossip). A full brother to Phar Lap. who was auctioned by Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., ran to I,oOOgns. and was knocked down to Mr. Alfred Louisson, owner of j Nightmarch. On the whole the Weathervane and Tea Tray stock went cheaply, but ; Pombal’s youngsters * received a fair j amount of attention, the colt from Motley falling to the bid of Mr. W. 11. Gaisford for 575gns. It was ex- j pected that this youngster would fetch : a much bigger price, but the fact that j Pombal was being represented by his first batch of foals no doubt made many j buyers wary.

ADDINGTON TRIALS CONCLIFF COMING BACK TO TRUE FORM LOGAN CHIEF PLEASES Special to THE Sl/.V CHRISTCHURCH. Today. Logan Chief and Daphne De Oro gave the fastest exhibition at Ad» dington this morning, reeling off a mile and a-half in 3.18 4-5, while Concliff was also seen to advantage in moving over 10 furlongs in 3.22. The track was in good order, but a strong wind made conditions unpleasant. Vesuvius had a good start from Zenith and Thorpie in a mile and a-half brush. Zenith went away at a tangle, but did not lose much ground, and after lying in behind Vesuvius for a mile an I a-quarter lie came away to score comfortably in about 3.24, with Thorpie over three lengths away. It was useful work for Zenith. A fine effort was that given by Concliff. Glideaway was of no use to liim at a mile and a-half. The former went away in the van and reached the first quarter in 34 2-ss, the half-mile in 1.9, and six furlongs in 1.41. He sprinted to the mile in 2.14, and after reaching a mile and a-quarter in 2.47, he came home in good style, finishing up the journey in 3.22. Glideaway was some four lengths away. Concliff is in excellent fettle and his work-out was a very useful effort toward his winding up for the New Zealand Gold Cup. Prince Pointer was sprinted home over a mile and a-half done at a 2.23 ; gait. The black stallion looks in splendid order. Audominion trotted f little better than a 2.22 clip for *• mile and a-half in company with • Bonnie Locanda. Audominion broke at the half-mile the last time. Another fine piece of work went down to the credit of Bogan Chief j and Daphne De Oro. who were associated over a mile and a-half. When Logan Chief led past the first quarter j in 33 4-ssec he was a length in front I of Daphne De Oro. and when the first I half had been left behind in 1.8 4-5 j Omaha joined in and the trio were £ racing in close order at the six furlongs, accomplished in 1.40. The Tnfift took 2.11 1-5 and the mile and aquarter 2.46. Then Daphne De Oro sprinted up on the rails, and once in line for home they raced together, passing the post with little between them. The full journey took Logan Chief 3.1 S 4-5 —a good effort against a fairly stiff wind. It is understood that Logan Chief may go to Perth for the championship contests. Mac De Oro and Pro Rata pleased by the manner in which they sprinted over a middle distance, while Nelson Boy trotted evenly throughout a mil* and a-half spin done in 3.39. He i* well and did his work comfortably. * Cyone went with another pacer over a short course. She did her work without apparent effort, making a good impression. Broker went nicely over a short journey. He is coming to hand pleasingly for E. C. McDermott. Brixton had slightly the better of Sarella at the end of a mile and ahalf at a good, jnlid working pace. Accumulator had the assistance of Jolly Pet free-legged for a two-mil® turn. The former broke twice iin<i then wound up the full journey in 4.42. Lingfield led Maiwhariti over a mile and a-half, but there was no pace on and the flat rate was about 2.19 to the mile.
