BEEF SLIGHTLY EASIER
Late Commercial
WESTFIELD STOCK SALE WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. Beef met a slightly easier market at Westfield today. Best ox made up to 42s a hundred; best cow and heifher beef sold at up to 38s a hundred. The offering of ox beef was made up of approximately 305 mostly handy weight cattle drawn from most parts of tho province. The bigger butchers were operating with greater freedom; exporters were also in the market, mostly for the heavier sorts of bullocks, and took quite an appreciable percentage of the offering. Despite the increase competition, however, the market showed an easier tendency. Top price of the day was secured for a line of big-framed, well-finished steers- on account of M. E. Ward, Colville, which made tip to £l7 for a pen which went to T. Baster, Ponsonby; the line of 13 averaged £l4 19s 9d. Forty-three light to medium-weight steers on account of Judd Bros., Maungataroto, averaged £l3. Sixteen on account F. G. Storey, Te Hoe, averaged £l4 14s. Eight well-finished steers on account C. G. Robertson averaged £ls 12s 6d. Nine good quality, hand steers, on account W. J. Higliam, Kaiaka, averaged £l3 19s. Two trucks of choice prime steers on account H. E._ Reed, Waerenga, made up to £lO 15s. Heavy prime steers on account of a Waikato vendor sold up to £lO 17s 6d for a pen which went to R. E. Stott, Birkenhead. One truck of medium-weight steers on account F. Freegard, Te Kauwhata, made from £l3 17s 6d to £l6 12s 6d. A line of 28 well-finished light to medium-framed steers, ‘oil account H. E. R. L. Wily. Mauku, averaged £l4 Is. Twelve handy-weight steers, on account F. A. Price. Papatoetoe, made from £l2 os to £l4. Themarket for cow and heifer beef did not show quite the same lack of strength as the ox beef market. Exporters operated steadily but sparingly throughout, and the smaller butchers took a big part of their requirements from this section. An offering of little short of 380 head was made up of a. big percentage of indifferently finished dairy sorts. Heavy prime cows made up to £l3 2s 6d. The market for an average yarding of calves opened slightly under last week’s rates, but firmed toward tlie close. An extra-choice Shorthorn runner topped the market in this section at £9 10s. Extra heavy vealers made £5 2s. An average yarding of sheep and lambs came forward. There was little of outstanding quality in either section and a start with the sale was not made till after 2.30 o’clock.
