PRAISE FOR MAORI FILM

“ROMANCE OF HINEMOA” IN HOLLYWOOD Writing to his brother in Auckland. ShayJo Gardner, the New Zealand actor now in Hollvwooe. makes reference to the mm. -The Romance of Hinentoa,” as follows: "Last night I had the great pleasure and thrill of seeing a Maori film called "Tho Romance of Hinemoa,” in Hollywood. It was wonderfully received by a packed house of cinema celebrities, who were loud in their praise of the natural Maori acting. "Their work in this film has inspired me with the desire to return to New Zealand to make some further films of the great Maori tales. “The Maoris are certainly fine actors, so it behoves our Government to use this natural advertising asset for all it ia worth.*’ The “Los Angeles Examiner,” writing about the same film, stated: A picturesque film made in New Zealand, “The Romance of Hinemoa,” relating one of the most cherished legends o! the Maori tribes, is the unusual picture on the current bill at the Filir.arte Theatre. It affords a glimpse of folklore of the fascinating Maori. Few film thrills are more starkly real than the episode in which the hero passes through the Valley of Eire. The scenes were filmed in the crater of an active volcano.’*
