Local Tracks Quiet For Week-End

OFF TO TE AROHA NOTES AND COMMENTS By ABAYDOS There was nothing startling in the way of solid tests at either Epsom or Otahuhu tracks during the week-end, which can be taken as an indication that trainers making the trip to Te Aroha this week are satisfied with the racing condition of their charges. Mountain Dell, looking bright and perky after a respite from the Alexandra Park grounds, stepped freely over a mile and a-half, registering a 2.20 gait for the journey. The novice Gold Seam attempted to go with her over the last mile, but left his feet and was soon well in the rear. Lord Haldane trotted steadilv over several circuits. He has developed a splint and is causing Owner Bob Saunders some uneasiness. The Epsom trainer has experienced more than his share of ill-luck with the Good Gift gelding. * * * Kewpie’s Guy, who worked pleasingly at the Grey Lynn cinder track one day last week, was at Epsom during the week-end. The Blue Mountain King filly was not asked to do her best but paced nicely over 10 furlongs. * # * Anseline trotted several circuits in bold style, aud Joe Gee has the consistent old mare in great heart. There is every possibility of the daughter of Nut Ansel capturing a prize in the not distant future. * * * Ken. Morrison has Benefice in splendid condition and the mare was indulged in long, steady work. This suggests that her connections will tackle the slow two-mile race at Te Aroha, and should it be run to suit the Rey de Oro mare in the early stages, she will b© dangerous at the end. Carnui was tried out at Epsom over 12 furlongs, but he did not give of his best. The El Carbine gelding looks 0.K., but so far he appears to Jack stamina. Separate tasks in saddle were apportioned Rolfe Audubon and Dad’s Hope. The former showed some speed over half a mile, and he may soon strike form again. Dad’s Hope accomplished his job in his usual good track style. Owner Davis was present at Epsom with his novice Roland, but the Great Audubon gelding was not set a serious task. He is a nice style of pacer and may do better later on. W. Willetts having taken up his quarters at Royal Oak has commenced operations at Alexandra Park with Oliver Thorpe and Nathaniel. Since leaving W. Turner’s charge, the Our Thorpe pair have been spelling, and are a long way below racing condition at present. No solid task was set for Vanity Boy during the week-end, but the smart little pacer is in good health. Plenty of work on the lead appears to suit the Normiston gelding and if taken to Te Aroha he will make a good showing. George Webb also has the half-brother to Vanity Boy, Great Vanity, coming along nicely. AT OTAHUHU Although there are a good number of horses being prepared at Otahuhu, business was not brisk during the week-end. Several candidates For Te Aroha were given useful work, but not asked to go against the clock. T. Roe is giving Peterson sound tasks and the Petereta trotter is working solidly. He is very well at present and should add interest to Saturday’s racing. The novice Nebraska has not yet been seen to the best advantage and not make the trip. T. Grimmond has Some Dillon and Realty looking ready for the races. The former is a useful improver, while the latter is showing encouraging form in saddle. S. Groat has a big team in commission, but will probably only take Black Ballin and Silver Link to Te Aroha. The former is working all right on the track, but has yet to reproduce his best form in a race. Silver Link does best in saddle and with M. Groat on deck is working well. The same trainer has a couple of improving novices in Queen’s Bond (Worthy Bond—Logan Queen) and a full-brother to All Bell and Nita Bell. Owing to the tightening of the improvers’ classes at Te Aroha this pair was not entered for the fixture. * * * Kohara, a recent addition to the Groat establishment, is in good heart and may be seen out in the Otahuhu Cup. His party was dissatisfied with the black pacer’s handicap at Wellington and he was not accepted for. * * * Geo. Patton’s pair, TJrsuline and Don Zolock, are doing all that is required of them. If the former can be induced to leave the mark correctly she will be a nuisance in the Te Aroha saddle heat. Don Zolock is trotting as if a short distance race will soon be within his reach. * * * S. M. August has a big string in commission, but apart from Stanmoor and Rockburn, they are not showing much for the patient labours of the Mangere trainer. Delavan Bill, Ben Zolock and Jasper have so far proved hard-case candidates, but a maiden by Silver Ribbon and a young trotter by The Triumph from Harvest Home are showing promise. * * * G. Mitchell has old Sebisca in great trim and the Harold Dillon gelding is demonstrating that he will win more money before he retires. Sebisca will be a nuisance to the pacers if he tackles them on Saturday. * * * Garth obertson is endeavouring to get Great Ballin up to concert pitch, and the brown pacer is showing signs of coming along all right as a result of the careful attention. The Ballin gelding may require more time to develop real stamina, but over a middle distance he will give a lot of cheek. The latest addition to Otahuhu training circles is Mountain Princess, Owner Foley having taken up his residence in Favona Road, Mangere. The mare looks in good condition, but has not been asked any serious questions since transferring from Epsom. * * * The aged Advance gelding Kingsclere is displaying some of his old time dash over sprint courses and his party is hoping that he will soon show some return for their trouble. Togo’s Promise is doing all that is required of him in approved fashion, and should be heard from again before the season ends. * * * A good number of trainers find it convenient to use the Grey Lynn cinder track put down by the Herring family, and when work at Epsom is suspended owing to stress of weather, those who visit Grey Lynn are able to get in useful tasks. The novices Man-o'-Belle, Great Quest and Carl Mac • are receiving tuition on this circuit, and while they may not be sufficiently forward for early racing are making good progress. The aged gelding Childe Audubon is trained on this track by S. Bullen, and is hitting out in a satisfactory manner*

Advertising the Dominion The outstanding three-year-old at the recent Perth Cup meeting was the New Zealand-bred filly Pure Blend, by Tea Tray, states an exchange. She was beaten half a head in the Derby, of £2.000, run on the first day, was favourite and comfortably won the All Aged Stakes (w.f.a.), of £SOO. on the middle day, and then ran second for the C. B. Cox Stakes. of £6OO, one mile and a-half (w.f.a.), on the concluding day of the meeting. She beat the South Australian Derby winner Hot Spring in both the Derby and All Aged Stakes, and though beaten by Runabout in the C. B. Cox Stakes, sh© managed to head off the favourite Coolboro, which had won the Perth Cup at the meeting under review.
