Spectacular Racing At Ngaruawahia

CUP TO ALWAYS WELL CONDUCTED SPORT A perfect summer day—about the first experienced in the province this season favoured the Ngaruawahia Racing Club for the staging of its popular non-totali-sator fixture on Saturday, when many stirring contests were witnessed by a large assemblage of the public. Although the attendance was well up to the standard of former years, many of the farming patrons of the club, taking advantage of the first available good day to “make hay while the sun shines,” were absent. Had this section ot the community been present as in former seasons the attendance would undoubtedly have proved a record. As usual the management, of the function was excellent, and the manner in which the officials worked had a good deal to do with the ultimate success of the meeting. Officialdom at Ngaruawahia is a real “top decker,” and should the club at any time secure a ‘tote” permit,” "Abaydus” in confident that whose who control the destinies of the country organisation will run the business in a manner that will compare favourably with many leading clubs. Mr. and Mrs. A. Sutherland were in their clement as host and hostess, while as the head of the organisation Mr. Sutherland was the right man in the right place. The secretarial duties were carried out by Mr. A. B. Jones in efficient and courteous style. Assistant Griffiths also being entitled to praise. The racing was of a high order, and in both galloping and trotting sections keen finishes were witnessed that testified to the thoroughness of the work of the respective adjusters. Messrs. F. McManemin and C. K. Goosman. The cup provided a fine, spectacular race, while the finish raised the enthusiasm of the spectators. Alwityn, handled judiciously by 11. Gilmer, hung on long enough to beat the much-heavier-weighted Mosque, whose run appeared to be made a trifle late. The time, 2.11 2-5. was decidedly good for the track. Parfuit Amour was a “star > * performer, securing a double. In the Flying Handicap of six furlongs he won decisively in 3.16 3-5, after a strenuous tussle down the long straight with Abbess and Archileen. The South Auckland Caledonian Pipe Band was present, and added to the enjoyment of a capital sporting and recreative function, with numerous spirited selections. Details of the racing, together with results, are appended. A Useful Hack Ktehi Rungi got the best of the start in the Trial, and at the end of two furlongs was well clear of Benighted, Queenstown and King Fame. The field closed up approaching the straight, where Steadyfire took command from Ktehi Rangi, Benighted, King Fame. Queenstown and ltangikeha. The latter finished strongest in a hard tussle to win by half a length from Bteadyfire, with Queenstown it similar distance back third. Then came Temperature, King Fame and Chesterman. A Fine Finish The free use of the scratching pen reduced the field in the Tradesmen's Handicap to five. Beila was left, and took no part in the race. Foreign Fancy was first out from Mangu King, Parfait Amour and Rangitoun. and with half the journey covered the quartet was practically on terms. Foreign Fancy holding a slight advantage. Parfait Amour and Foreign Fancy led i*o und the turn from Rangitoun and Mangu King, but at the distance Ran - citoun made an effort and got on terms with the top-weight. Docked together they hurried to the post, but Parfait Amour had most punch left, to win by half a length. Foreign Fancy was a

length away third, and three lengths back came Mangu King. Always Wins Cup Although the Cup field was reduced to five it provided a splendid contest, and there was little separating four of the runners at the finish. Nulli Secundus and Chesterman immediately raced to the front, and making the pace a cracker the pair had a lead of eight lengths along the back from Always, who was followed closely by Mosque and Red Day. Crossing the top Chesterman and Nulli Secundus were still well clear of the remainder, but.by the time the straight was reached the field was bunched closely, Nulli Secundus having a. slight lead. Chesterman was the first to cry enough, and half-way down the straight Always hit the front, and despite a strong challenge from Mosque hung on to win by a length. Red Day was half a length away third, with Nulli Secundus the same distance back fourth and Chesterman beaten oft. An Easy Victory In the Publicans’ Handicap Steadyfire and Benighted got the worst of the dispatch, and Rangikaha, penalised 71b for his previous win, led out from AVhitiora, Asmodeus and King Fame. As they raced across the top Benighted had made up his lost ground, and was in the van from Townsman and Rangikaha. Kntering the straight Townsman had the advantage over Steadyfire, Benighted. Rangikaha and Asmodeus. The latter did best in the run home and scored well by two lengths from Rangikaha, who beat Steadyfire by half a length. Then came Townsman. King Fame and Whitiora. Top-Weights In the Picture A good field of ten faced the starter for the final event—Flying Handicap—and from a good dispatch Abbess, Always anti Foreign Fancy showed out first. Crossing the top, Parfait Amour ran up into second place behind Abbess and this pair led round the bend pursued closely by Archileen, Always, Nulli Secundus and Rangitoun. There was a great race to the post between Parfait Amour, Abbess and Archileen, and they passed the post in that order, with loss than a length between. Close up cam© Rangitoun.
