TROUBLE WITH CARGO
MAUI POMARE AGAIN BANANAS OVER RIPE Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Owing to signs of her cargo of bananas becoming over-ripe, the Island steamer Maui Pomare put into Wellington last night, instead of pro* ceeding to Lyttelton. The refrigerating machinery was working satisfactorily but the fruit was on the ripe side. When loaded at Apia the heat was then 98 degrees in the shade and 114 in the sun. Portion of her cargo is now being discharged. A visit to the scene of operations shows the fruit is in good condition, although some cases show signs of ripening. There are approximately 3,000 cases for Wellington, including the whole of the Niue Island fruit, about 1,000 cases. The remainder of the cargo is for the South Islaud. being approximately 4.500* cases, all from Apia. The Maui Pomare will proceed to Lyttelton at three o’clock. At the fruit market, where a sale is taking place, buyers say the cargo is mixed, with a tendency to ripeness. Reports from the market state that delivery from the ship v.»as slow, and only a small quantity was sold al today’s sales. Niue bananas were in a setter condition than those shipped at Apia, but the condition of the fruit precludes any possibility of its being offered for sale in Auckland. Prices varied according to condition, but went as low as 5s u, case.
