German Runner Hooted
PELTZER DEVELOPS HEART TROUBLE Refuses to Meet Champion AUSTRALIAN CROWD ANNOYED United P. A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Received 10.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. IJOR refusing to run against the local champion, the German * athlete, Dr. Otto Peltzer, was hooted near the close of the wonderfully successful athletic carnival held at the Sydney cricket ground on Saturday. Peltzer stated later that his heart and an attack of rheumatism troubled him.
In the 440yds event the first division was won by G. A. Golding in 48 3-10 sec, which is an Australian and New South Wales record. Peltzer had refused to run against Golding in the quarter-mile section of the relay race, on the ground that he was suffering from rheumatism and heart trouble. When the official announcer made the fact known the huge crowd hooted him. The officials were compelled to find a substitute f jr Golding, in order to keep faith with the public, who had gone to see Peltzer run, and the choice fell upon R. D. Norman. During the progress of the relay contest, when Peltzer began to overhaul Norman, the crowd began hooting, which they never ceased until Peltzer reached the dressing room, where he was obviously distressed. Dr. Peltzer said he had not felt up
to the task of meeting that great quarter-miler Golding, adding: “Any doctor will tell you that an athlete should not run in my state of health.” The official announcer, prior to the race, had told the crowd that Peltzer had flatly refused to race against Golding. A section of the newspapers expresses the opinion that this was brutally candid, and that language less discourteous could have been used. Other newspapers do not spare Peltzer, whom they describe as being “extremely temperamental.” Dr. Peltzer said later that he would be willing to meet Golding in Melbourne if an international relay race would be arranged. He was attacked by rheumatism on Saturday morning and his heart was troubling him after running the 880yds event.
