ST. JAMES
FINE COLOUR TALKIE Universally acknowledged to be the most perfect colour picture yet produced, “Gold Diggers of Broadway,” an all-talking production, is now screening the fourth week of an exceptionally successful season at St. James Theatre. The film, which was made by the technicolour process, concerns the adventures, both romantic and humorous, of four New York stage girls who indulge in extensive “gold digging” operations among their wealthy admirers. The many beautifully coloured scenes which follow one another in quick succession abound in pleasing dances and vocal items, while the bright dialogue is an attractive feature. Winnie Lightner has the leading role, others seen and heard to advantage being Ann Pennington, Nick Lucas and Conway Tearle. Several variety numbers are shown, CRYSTAL PALACE, MT. EDEN “Innocents of Paris,” a glittering musical show interspersed with plenty of romance and comedy, scored a popular welcome at the Crystal Palace Theatre on Saturday evening, and will be repeated there again today. Maurice Chevalier, known as “the idol of the French stage,” makes this his talkie debut to audiences throughout the world. His vivacious personality shines through the whole story, and he sings eight new songs. The Crystal Palace programme also includes a number of short talking and singing featurettes. DIXIELAND CABARET The cool and luxurious Dixieland Cabaret at Point Chevalier will be the scene of another happy dance this evening. The floor is in perfect condition, the surroundings extremely comfortable and new music will be played by that clever combination, the Dixieland Dance Band.
