Glare An Unlucky Runner
The Wellington Cup. decided at Trentham on Saturday, was a triumph for the Kilbroney gelding Concentrate, who scored in the Auckland Cup last month. He got the best of the start and never left the rails throughout. Down the back the last time he at as Ivins' in third place, but at the lialt'mile it was apparent that he could so to the front at his rider's desire. After entering the straight he soon passed the leaders, Latin Quarter and Amor, and ridden out, indicted a decisive defeat on Bright Glow and totar Stranger. , „„„„ It was an outstanding performance, and Concentrate won so decisively that he must now be accepted as one of the Dominion's best handicap performers. Star Stranger had every chance but his solid weight had begun to tell on him before the final furlong had been undertaken. At the mile post the Martian gelding was standing up tne leaders. Latin Quarter and Amor, a big start, but Reed, apparently realising that the pace-makers were m ?kmg. the best of their way home, lost little time in sending his mount to within striking distance of the first half-dpzcn runners. o 4o _. At the seven furlongs post tnni Stranger began a great run on the outride. Inch by inch he was overhauling his rivals, and by the time the halfmile was reached some spectators h a d proclaimed him the winner. Blit keener followers of racing knew that Star Stranger would have to be a super
horse to win after making such a run so far from home, and so it proved. Soon after Star Stranger entered the straight ho came to breaking point. His earlier effort had left him devoid of his customary brilliance at the end of his races, and so he merely struggled on, a beaten horse, to gain third money. The surprise of the race was the bold showing made by Bright Glow. Always doubted as a stayer, she showed today that up to 12 furlongs she is entitled to respect in first class company. She stripped in excellent style,
but at the weights found Concentrate Interference at a critical stage of the race settled whatever chance date had The Trenthnm candidate was one of the first to hecin but his rider. R. Coveney, was not seen in his best form in a. race like the A\ cllington CUP, where speed from the barrier is essential The Riccarton horseman failed in what is supposed to be his infallible forte, and so forfeited Jli ifter the field had gone four furlongs Glare was in a hopeless position at the toil of the field, and not till six furlongs from home did he improve his position. Down the hack his rider attempted to send him through on the inside, but despite Coveney s repeated urging Glare made Httl attempt to seize his opportunity. -v little farther on he commenced to unwind a powerful run. and at the home turn he made a smart effoi t on ♦lift inside. However. bcfoie tne straight w-as entered he had to be checked from galloping on the heels of horses in front. Thus his ridel had to ease him and then come round the field It was here that Glare met with serious interference. He became unbalanced and did not settle down till l alf-way down the running. Then lie put in a run that surprised most racing folk. HO was showing a wonderful burst of speed but the post - too near and a close fifth position at the end H !VL the rider shown his usual alacrity at the start of the Cup, and bad the hoi sc
been in a good position with six furlongs to go, he might have gained a place; in fact, he might easily have beaten Concenti'ate. In the Shade ran a poor race, as did Vertigern, while Panther failed to stay. Shrewd ran solidly. After leading into the straight with Latin Quarter, who finished a good fourth, Amor petered out in the run home. Pride was always in the rear, but her chance was spoiled somewhat by unintentional interference.
