WAITEMATA COUNTY

WEATHER HOLDS WORK UP

REPORT BY ENGINEER

The work during the month of December was reported upon by the engineer to a meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday. During the Christmas holidays particular attention had been paid to the maintenance of the main highways throughout the county. Spasmodic attempts were being made to complete grant works as soon as possible, but it was evident that if fine weather did not prevail before the end of the present month, the council would have some difficulty in completing its programme of works as intended. The contractor for the earthworks on the main highway in the Titirangi Riding had been delayed to a certain extent on account of the holiday period and the wet weather, but he had nevertheless made excellent progress with the work as opportunity offered. During the past month a survey of the dam site for the Motutara w r ater supply had been carried out with a view to improving conditions in the locality. Plans and proposals were now in hand for the covering of the reservoir to prevent contamination of tho supply. Alterations were being made to the existing pipe line to enable the widening operations to be carried out on the road giving access to the Muriwai Beach, and it was hoped that the whole of the works on this job would be completed before the end of the month.

The Glen Eden Town Board wrote asking the council to be represented at a conference of the New Lynn Borough Council and the Henderson and Glen Eden Town Boards, in connection with the proposed appointment of a. joint traffic inspector, as suggested by the Main Highways Board, which body was prepared to subsidise the cost of maintaining the inspector on a £1 for £1 basis. The council decided that the present inspector was able to fulfil all the necessary duties without another being appointed. During December building permits, representing property to the value of £3,239 were issued.
