HEARING KING’S VOICE
BROADCAST SPEECH AT CONFERENCE DOMINION ARRANGEMENTS King George's speech at the opening in London of the Five Powers Naval Conference will be heard in Auckland. New Zealand listeners-in will hear speeches from the conference in a broadcast beginning at 11 o’clock on Tuesday night, New Zealand time, and ending at one o’clock on Wednesday morning. The conference takes Place in the Royal Gallery of the House of Lords. Should wireless conditions be favourable, the broadcasting stations at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin will, in common with radio stations in many countries, rebroadcast the important speeches. The first speech will be made by King George; it will be his first public pronouncement since his illness and, should the radio plans prove to be successful, the first time his voice has been head broadcast from London through New Zealand stations. The intention is to pick up the speech direct from London on short wave from SSW (Chelmsford) station. An attempt to rebroadcast is also being made by 2FC, Sydney. Sydney and GBS station, London, have been holding successful shortwave tests recently with a view to establishing a commercial service similar to that existing between New York a,nd London. The short-wave conditions during the past week or so have been particularly favourable, and the conversations between London and Sydney have been clearly heard in New Zealand. The Chelmsford station sending out the speeches at the Naval Conference has been heard directly by New Zealand listeners-in previously. It was the station which broadcast the thanksgiving service on the occasion of the King's recovery from his illness. With proper conditions, the rebroadcast direct from London will be successful. Otherwise, a relay from Sydney will probably be attempted.
