RECORD SHORTHAND SPEED
150 WORDS A MINUTE IN NINE MONTHS Among the many notable successes earned in recent years by students of the Auckland Business College, two typical incidents from 1929 are of interest. Miss Ruth Wheeler, a student of the Auckland Business College, was awarded a certificate for 150 words a minute by Pitman’s Examining Board m November, 1929. She had no previous knowledge of shorthand when she began studying it on February 11 last. During her course the following certificates were gained by her:—ln July, 100 words a minute; August, 130 words a minute; October, 140 words a minue; November, 150 words a minute. She was also successful in passing both the Senior and Intermediate Divisions of the Government Examination for Shorthand Typists. Miss Belle McElroy, another student of the Auckland Business College, has also a list of brililant successes to her 'credit. Beginning her studies on January 28/, 1929, she was awarded a certificate for 100 words a minute by Pitman’s Examining Board, 130 words a minute in August, 140 words a minute in October. Miss McElroy also gained the coveted distinction of winning first place in Auckland in the Senior Division of the Government Examination for Shorthand-Typists, and passed the Intermediate Division. During the year Miss McElroy won the bronze and silver medals awarded by the Under- i wood Typewriter Company. Such records can only have been achieved by girls who had a thorough grounding of every branch shorthand theory, as well as proper train -
Thorough training of this nature is the specialty of the Auckland Business College. No detail is overlooked. From the first day in the school the girl is coached carefully and individually in shorthand, in every side of typewriting and typewriters, and in other subjects of value in office work. The result is that girls leave the Auckland Business College equipped to take up office work, . immediately, under the best conditions to secure an excellent salary. The employer is naturally pleased to have a girl who can “take down” his dictation as quickly as he can give it, transcribe it accurately, and is conversant with office work. To prepare a girl for this work is the aim of the Auckland Business College—the measure of their preparation can be gauged by their wonderful success in this arduous test of speed shorthand.
