In starting a herd it is wise first to obtain four or five reliable purebred females; these will form the nucleus of the herd. One can build the stud herd, writes an exchange, out of and around those four or five animals. When we are buying a young bull, writes an English authority, we consider his dam the most important individual in his pedigree. She indicates to quite a large extent what we may expect in his daughters. After his dam we want to see his sire, and then his parental granddam.
