UNIFORMS IMPORTED FOR ADAPTATION OF REMARQUE’S NOVEL
j i ERMAN Army field equipment, used during the World War, imported tor use in filming Erich Maria Remarque’s war narrative, ‘•All Quiet on the Western Front,” has been received at the Los Angeles Customs House. The equipment consists of 250 complete outfits worn by German soldiers and additional field accessories. Each uniform, exclusive of rifle and bayonet, cost 110 dollars to purchase and bring to California. The outfits are complete to the smallest detail, with gas masks, spades, entrenching tools and cooking utensils. On some articles, such as gold-braided epaulets of the officers’ uniforms, import duty ran as high as 90 per cent, of the cost. “All Quiet on the Western Front” goes into production shortly under Lewis Milestone’s direction.
