SEVERE TRAFFIC TEST

TRIAL OF NEW SYSTEM FAVOURABI.fi PROGRESS REPORT A traffic test on 20 chains of cement penetration in the Birkenhead Biding of the Waitemata County is in progress at present, and details were given by the county engineer at a meeting of the council yesterday. The conditions of the test, which was arranged in conjunction with the Main Highways Board, called for the running up and down the 20 chains length, of a 10 tons loaded truck running along definite lines on the slab itself. A complete survey of the sur- j face and track of the roads was to be I made during the test by the assistantengineer to the Public Works Department, who would be stationed on the work throughout the period. The engineer reported that the test was started at the beginning of this week and the truck had averaged 180 trips a day over the length. To date there was no sign whatever of this extraordinary traffic on the slab, and it would appear that the experimental section was going to withstand the test without any detrimental effect Immediately after completion of the test, if it was successful, steps would, be taken to obtain approval from the Mam Highways Board of the council's proposals for continuing this construction on the Birkenhead main highway, operations on which were at present held up pending the results.
