PAEROA NEWS
The question of repairing the main street footways, which for a long time have been sadly neglected, was raised by Cr. Silcock at the meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council. The Mayor pointed out that the footpaths could not receive attention at present, as the old telegraph poles along the whole of the main street had to be removed by the Telegraph Department. * * * A big military camp is to be held at Paeroa from February 12 to February 20. Stores are already on the race- ; course ground, and from now on various other supplies will be arriving. About 500 or 600 men will be in camp, and local tenders will be solicited for the catering. * * * A fire at Mackaytown early yesterday morning totally destroyed a fiveroomed house and furniture occupied by Mr. H. K. Meagher. The furniture and effects were insured for £2OO, and the house for a similar amount. Mr. C. E. Bassett, V.C., manager of the Paeroa branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, has left on a motoring trip of the North Island. While he is away, Mr. W. A. Harrington w’ill be in charge. * * * Mr. J. A. Delaney, an old resident of Ohinemuri, has just returned from a two-years’ trip to New Guinea goldfields. The rich specimen he has brought with him show that he has been among the rich stone of that region. Mr. Delaney describes the weather of New Guinea as quite equal to that of New Zealand. He will be returning to New Guinea in a month's time.
