IN THE NORTH
WAIPAPAKAURI R.C. ANNUAL FIXTURE PROSPECTS FOR TODAY WEEK After witnessing the racing at Kawakawa this afternoon, Mr. F. J. McManemin will this evening frame his handicaps for the Wanpapakauri meeting, to he held at Waipapakauri next Saturday. Acceptances close on Monday at 5 p.m. with the secretary, Mr. N. McDonald, Awanui, or with Messrs. Blonifield and Co., Auckland. A big entry list was in evidence when nominations closed last week for the Northern fixture, so there should be good fields. The entries averaged nearly 20 a race, which was remarkably good for a Far North fixture. Next Saturday will make the first occasion upon which the Waipapakauri Racing Club has held a totalisator meeting on its course. Hitherto nontotalisator fixtures have been held for some time, and these obtained well deserved popularity. Improved Course Last season the Waipapakauri Club was unable to race on its home track, but in the interim a good deal of work has been put into the course, and it is now an up-to-date convincing ground for thoroughbreds. The coming meeting next Saturday is being regarded in the Far North as something in the nature of a gala fixture, and it is expected that to mark the holding of the first totalisator meeting there will be a record crowd present from all parts of the district and beyond. The president, Mr. T. H. Kenny, and his executive have left nothing to chance, and it now requires only fine weather. The roads to Waipapakauri are reported to be in excellent order. Ambitious Programme A remarkably fine programme has been drawn up for Saturday next, and the move to confine the card to seven races is to be commended. First and foremost on the bill of fare is the Waipapakauri Cup, of £250, one and a-quarter miles. The winner takes £l5O and a beautiful gold cup valued at £SO, so it is not at all surprising that this race has attracted the biggest entry list, 23 horses being nominated. The principal short race is the Flying Handicap, of £l2O, six furlongs. There is another sprint, the Evan’s Memorial Handicap, of £IOO, run over the same distance. The Ivaitaia Handicap is confined to district horses. This class of race is very necessary, for it is to these horses that Northern clubs look to to supply the nucleus of their fields. The prospects for next Saturday’s racing at Waipapakauri promise the best of sport, and in view of the club’s very ambitious programme it is to be hoped that the fixture proves to be a financial success. Most of the horses entered for the meeting are racing today at Kawakawa, and they will be picked up by a boat leaving Auckland on Monday, this steamer leaving Opua on Tuesday for W aipapakauri.

Name Claimed Included in the team W. Gough is working at Avondale is a two-year-old filly by Autumn from Polly De Luxe. She has not raced yet, but will bear the name of Armutum. Promising Colt Under F. Dowding’s tuition at Avondale is a two-year-old colt, by Lucullus from an Elysian mare. He is not so forward as the rest of the two-year-olds seen at the suburban centre, for he has not been hurried ; —in fact lie has not been asked to cover more than a couple of furlongs. But he is a nice type of youngster with plenty of length and an attractive appearance. It will probably be toward the end of the season before he makes his debut, and as a three-year-old more than one race can be expected to go to his credit. Not In the Limelight The number of horses in training at Avondale do not exceed a score at the present, but difficulties often arise owing to the fact that horsemen are scarce at the suburban course. A young jockey who is required to do more than his share of track riding is E. Tierney, who is attached to P. Scally’s stable. This lad has been domiciled at this centre for some time now, and outside of those with whom he is in frequent contact he is an unknown quantity as a horseman. But Tierney has an aptitude for riding if comments from trainers and owners are any criterion, and his riding of Branson at the recent Thames gathering was favourably commented on. Tierney goes to scale at about 7.5, and with a good pair of hands and keen judgment he invariably gets the best out of a horse. It is probable that he will get more opportunities in the future, for it is likely that he will do the riding on Branson, Maori Boy and others.

Rapier’s Programme Rapier continues to do well in his track work, and he is gradually getting into good form. comments a Christchurch paper. The present intention is to race him at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting- next month, also at the Banks Peninsula meeting, early in March. Provided he remains sound, he will add interest to some of the big events in the autumn, including the Trentham Gold Cup and the Awapuni Gold Cup, both of which races he won last year. In Useful Work Riccarton Trainer F. Christmas is keeping Red Heckle going in useful tasks, but so far he has made no arrangements for racing that Great Northern Derby winner. He is a brilliant galloper, but a delicate constitution is a serious handicap.
