TERRIFIC ICE-JAM
SHIPS AND CARGO BLOCKED IN CHINA GORGE CANALS FROZEN OVER United 1\ A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 10.10 a.in. SHANGHAI, Friday. The Szechwan Province, with a population of approximately 70.000,000. is virtually isolated from river communication in consequence of a terrific icejam. which is reported from the Yaugtse Gorges beyond Ichang. All river shipping customarily travelling in the gorges is at a standstill. ice-packs, as the result of a week's intense wintry conditions, are forming a solid wall holding up many vessels and thousands of tons of cargo, causing concern to shipping firms and merchants. Dynamite is believed to be necessary to reopen the gorges. Several British gunboats are temporarily held prisoner behind the icepacks. Thousands of inland junks and ferries throughout North China are similarly idle. Half the country’s canals are frozen. This is the severest winter for many years.
