SLY-GROGGER FINED

HAS NOW ABANDONED BUSINESS FINE OF £SO IMPOSED A plea by Mr. Sullivan that his client be not sent to gaol was successful when William Henry Buckley was fined £SO at the Police Court this morning for slygrog selling. Buckley was charged with sly-grog selling on November 15 at his premises, No. 232 Hobson Street. Mr. Sullivan entered a plea of guilty. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady reminded the Court that Buckley had been fined £SO for a similar offence in August last when he had been convicted on each of four charges. After that he had still carried on the business. Mr. Sullivan pointed out that only four and a-half bottles of beer had been found on the premises when the place was raided. Buckley had now abandoned the business and, as he was making a fresh start, counsel hoped that the Court would give him the chance to pay a fine. The senior-sergeant said that the business had been carried on over the Christmas holidays. There had been complaints to the police. Default of the fine was fixed at six months’ imprisonment and Buckley was given two weeks in which to find the money. A charge of sly-grog selling preferred against Eunice Buckley, wife of defendant, was adjourned for a week, Mr. Sullivan explaining that the woman was ill.
