The “Hat-Trick”
Apropos Allom’s “hat-trick'’ in the first cricket test, this feat in test matches is extremely rare, and only six have been recorded in the long: series of fights for the ashes between England and Australia. In 1878-79, F. R. Spofforth, at Melbourne, dismissed V. F. Hoyle, F. A. Mackinnon and T. Emmett with successive balls, Emmett being caught and the other two bowled. I-lugh Trumble, at Melbourne, in the 1901-2 season, had J. Gunn, A. O. Jones and S. F. Barnes all caught off three successive balls he sent down, and the same bowler, again at Melbourne, in the 1903-4 season, dismissed P. F. Warner, B. J. T. Bosanquet and A. A. Lilley with successive balls. This j was on a regular glue-pot wicket, nd i Trumble secured i seven for 28*in this innings, this making I a sensational final + match. Englishmen have also performed the “hat trick” three times in test matches. In 1882-3, W. Bates fired out P. S. McDonnell, G. Giffen and G. J. Bonnor with successive deliveries. Johnny Briggs, at Sydney, in 18912, sent W. Giffen, S. T. Callaway and J. M. Blackham to the right-about with successive deliveries. J. T. Hearne, at Leeds in 1899, performed a remarkable feat by dismissing three such great batsmen as M. A. Noble, S. E. Gregory and C. Hill with successive deliveries. The lastnamed was bowled, and the other two caught.
