Shield Tennis Dates
So far nothing definite has been arrived at in regard to dates for Wilding Shield challenge tennis matches against W’ellington, the holder of the trophy (writes the Sun's Wellington correspondent). South Canterbury entered a challenge some time ago, but neither side could come to any definite arrangement about suitable dates, and the indications at the moment are that the southerners will have to forgo their challenge. Auckland has issued a challenge, and Wellington has suggested February 21 and 22, but it is understood that these dates do not suit Auckland, which province suggests dates more adjacent to those of the national tournament, which would allow the Auckland players to kill two birds "with one stone — play for the Wilding Shield and the Nunnelley Casket either before or after they finish with the New Zealand championships. South Canterbury was anxious for similar dates, but W’ellington would not hear of it. It almost seems that the rules will have to be amended so that an arbitrator can be i called in when two provinces disagree over any question of dates, otherwise j the time will come when these tennis I trophies will find no challengers.
