SECRETARY FINED £lO “DISGUSTING,” SAYS MAGISTRATE Fro.'n Our Oicn Correspondent: HAMILTON, Today. Charles P. Harrington, secretary of the Eureka Tennis Club, again appeared in the Hamilton Police Court today charged with unlawfully supplying liquor at a club dance at the Eureka hall. The circumstances had been outlined at a previous hearing. Alfred Arthur Sutherland, aged 19, testified that he paid 3s admission to the dance, and was supplied with liquor from three kegs. Subsequently he and his companions were ejected. He saw several dancers drunk. Leicester N. Masters, farmer, of Eureka, gave evidence of the unruly behaviour of certain youths. A room containing liquor was closed occasionally to prevent the issue of more beer. Defendant said that 15 or 20 gallons of beer was consumed. He was not aware that this was an offence. The magistrate said the evidence disclosed a disgusting state of affairs. The committee handed out beer to all and sundry, some being little more than children. He fined Harrington £lO, and ordered him to pay costs.
