Wellington Races
Tomorrow’s Interesting Card Big Fields Reviewed ONE of the most important fixtures on the calendar is the summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Slub. This is to open at Trentham tomorrow, and will be continued on Monday and Wednesday, with the yearling sales on Tuesday thrown in as an additional event of purely sporting interest. “Early Bird’s” review of the first day’s card is given below.
The fields for tomorrow are very big, too big for the careful backer, and the results may prove once again how exceedingly difficult it is for even the best informed backers to make money on this course. The opening day’s card commences with the Trentham High-Weight The fact that this event is confined to riders over obstacles makes it a good deal more puzzling. Some with the right credentials and likely to be well ridden are King’s Jest, Vivo, Master Clarence, Mister Gamp, Fine Acre, Masher, P.rinc© of Orange, Llyn Du, Omeo, Semper Paratus, Patearoa, Diana’s Lad and Arrowzone, and the winner should be among this lot. Favourites may comprise KING’S JEST FINE ACRE MASTER CLARENCE Wellington Stakes ! Although a big field was left in this ! classic after the final payment, the i number of runners will not reach ! double figures. If present the chances ; of the following could be seriously coni sidered: —Awaken. Tenterden. Aspiring. Jaleux, Dunraven, Chrysology, Isa, ! Princess Betty, Arisus and Cylinder. Best backed, in the absence of Aspiring (a really smart three-year-old), may be CYLINDER DUNRAVEN CHRYSOLOGY Apprentices’ Plate The youngsters will have a royal show in this race to show what skill they possess. Good hacks engaged include Air Laddie, Auctioneer, Assemble, Blue Metal, Dolomite, Disorder, Dutch Money, Head Serang, Imateagi.rl, Limosin, My Own, Portray, Rational 11. and The Bailiff. It is a particularly open race, in which it is likely a preference will be expressed for HEAD SERANG DOLOMITE DISORDER Fitzherbert Handicap The handicap event for two-year-olds has not attracted such a big field as in the past, but still there are 22 left in, the majority of whom are not too well known. The recent form of Arajean, Nimble, Jenny Diver, Sporting Chance, Green Linnet, Coroner, Hard Words, Appeal, and Joie de Val is best known, and anything outside this coterie will
not bo in keen demand, unless there is a “springer” engaged. It is a hard race, but this trio may be in the picture. NIMBLE HARD WORDS JENNY DIVER Wellington Cup This, the star turn of the day, and of the meeting too for that matter, is
fully dealt with in a special review. Star Stranger is the logical favourite, but then the conditions are such as to be against him. Should the tracks dry up magically in the interim one would be strong for the Martian gelding. On soft ground Concentrate would be fancied, as well perhaps as Glare, Shrewd. Bright Glow and Singleton. Providing that the going is soft, as it is expected, backers may switch over in favour of — STAR STRANGER CONCENTRATE VERTIGERN Anniversary Handicap This race never ceases to be one of the most interesting decided at Trontham’s summer fixture. Goshawk has a lot of weight, but he is a fit horse.
Teri is a good sort, and, of course, we are all acquainted now, if not previously, with the nortorious Lucky Light. High Falutin’ showed great form at Marton, and even allowing for the fairly weak opposition he played ducks and drakes with them. He is one to be with over the three days, for he looks like giving Trainer F. Tilley a good send-off and Deputy-Trainer L. G. Morris a fine start. Talisker will be at his right distance, and Night Lad is a smart tliree-year-old, capable of doing better .than anything he has yet shown with a good boy up. Ti Tree will be at her right distance, and then there are Clarendon, Full Feather, Antique. Chopin, Joy Bird and Tcheka to make it really interesting. Favourites may be— HIGH FALUTIN’ NIGHT LAD LUCKY LIGHT Telegraph Handicap Under the conditions prevailing it is more than probable that the placegetters will come from the lightlyweighted division, the best of whom may be Arrow Lad, Knightlike, Great Charter, Aspiring. Richfield, Just So, Royal Saxon, Glenartney and Aston. Of the eight stone and over division the elect may comprise Cimabue, Silvermine. Meadowlark, Hunting Cry. Mervette and Great Star. It is going to be a good race to watch and a hard one to pick, but this trio, in the absence of Aspiring, should be very much in the forefront: HUNTING CRY" MERVETTE KNIGHTLIKE Ruapehu Handicap There are several smart hacks engaged in the final event of the day, among these being Statuary, Zarene, Blue Paper, Limosin, Habit, the OralEquitant bracket, Grecian. Proud Knight, Straightcourse. Lord Tliomond, Havaspot, Kahu Ariki and Money Mint. Favourites may be— STATUARY' HABIT
THE ACCEPTANCES
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF RACING (1) Thou shalt not dispute the decision of the judges. They alone are in perfect alignment, and do not see finishes through prejudiced eyes. (2) Thou shalt not condemn the owner, trainer, or jockey because the horse is not successful. Horses are not automatons. (3) Thou shalt cleanse thy mind and \ know most crooked racing emanates | in a player’s mind after he has lost a ( wager. Especially does this apply to ‘ players (punters) who believe horses , must finish according to their figures, j (4) Thou also shouldst know that J cheaters in all lines never finish with L anything but an unenviable reputation. j (5) If thou playest an unruly horse, j do not blame the starter for any poor ; result‘d. (G) Thou shouldst know thou canst j beat ono race, and possibly six races, in one day, but thou canst not beat •
36 or more races in six days, even though thou sleepest on the seventh day. (7) If thou hast an opinion of thine own, and playest another’s losing tip, and thine own horse wins, hold thy tongue or lend thyself to ridicule. (8) Thou shouldst remember that to be successful thou must wager as much money on a horse quoted at large odds as thou wouldst on a favourite. (9) Thou shouldst remember to reduce thy wagers during a change of track, owing to weather conditions, until track conditions are again normal. (10) If thou art 21 years of age. and in thy right mind, and using thine own, n?onev. there is no healthier, cleaner, sport than horse-racing. Hospitals and gaols were built for unfortunates and crooks. —“National Turf Digest.”
