Flood Waters Cut Gap in Main Road
CANTERBURY DELUGE THRILLS FOR MOTORISTS Press Association ASHBURTON, Today. A gap 80 feet long by ten feet deep was cut in the main south road by the overflowing of the Ashburton River yesterday. The sun is shining today, but the rivers in the county are still in high flood. Many cars took a big risk in crossing the water on the road yesterday, and, as the metal was washing away beneath the wheels, several had narrow escapes from being swept into deep water. Passengers in a service car became terrified and when in the middle of the flood demanded that the driver return. He did so; dropped his passengers and went across safely with a margin of only a few inches outside the wheels.
A sunken road alongside the main road is still deep under water, but through traffic will be able to negotiate the approach to the bridge by evening. Meanwhile the railway is conveying passenger’s cars past the gap.
