N.Z. MUST WAKE UP!
TOURISTS NOT SATISFIED WITH ACCOMMODATION PUBLICITY AGENT’S VIEWS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. For 25 years Mr. W. A. James has filled the post of New Zealand’s publicity agent at Vancouver and at present is spending three months’ holiday in the Dominion, his first visit for 20 years. He is accompanied by Mrs. James. In an interview this morning he expressed amazement at the growth of New Zealand cities, reality far exceeding his expectations. Excellent results had followed New Zealand’s participation in the Toronto Exhibition and the appointment of Mr. Collins as Canadian Trade Commissioner was looked upon with gratification.
He said New Zealand would have to wake up to the fact that the wealthy Americau tourist could not be expected to be content with, or would recommend to his friends, second-class and mediocre accommodation. If New Zealand really intended to cater for the tourist traffic from America she would have to shake off her com-, placency. TRADE WITH CANADA
New Zealand’s trade with Canada was growing apace. There was a minority of outcry against the importation of New Zealand butter into Canada, but this came from the local producers, who were interested in keeping prices “sky high” in the winter months. As a matter of fact, Canada could not produce anything like the amount of butter it required and it was to the credit of New Zealand exporters that they had taken advantage of this market and incidentally reaped the benefit of the trade treaty between Australia and Canada and the tariff wall put up by the United States against Canada. He suggested that it might in the long run do Canada good, forcing her to seek other markets and thus stimulating Empire trade.
