ROMANTIC ASSOCIATION WITH INVENTIONS BROADCAST REMINISCENCES Reed. 10 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. Broadcasting in the celebration of bis SSth birthday, Sir Alfred Yarrow, the noted shipbuilding engineer, revealed his remarkable association with two epoch-making inventions. His adventures on the road in 1861 in a steam carriage led to legislation forbidding the use of engine-driven vehicles unless a man walked ahead carrying a red flag. This provision was not repealed until the Motor Act of 1896. It is also disclosed that Sir Alfred ■was the first Englishman to use a typewriter. The first batch was imported from America in IS7G. During the landing, a case containing a dozen machines, fell to the dock, and when raised from the mud, no one knewwhat they were. Sir Alfred Yarrow and a friend purchased the dozen for a few shillings, and had them cleaned and oiled. In response to an advertisement for a shorthand writer who could play the piano, a youth applied and was engaged. He remained in Sir Alfred Yarrow’s employment until his death.
