CYCLISTS SUSPENDED

COMPETITORS AT WESTERN SPRINGS DECISION BY COUNCIL Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The following motion, proposed by Mr. E. C. Guy and seconded by Mr. L. A. Tracy, was passed by the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association this evening: “That all officials and competitors taking part in any way in the meeting held by the Manukau Cycling Club on December 30 be suspended and given 10 days to show cause why they should not be disqualified from acting or competing in any sports meetings held under the jurisdiction of the association; also that the centres be advised of this position, so that the officials and competitors in question are not permitted in the meantime to take part in any meetings held by such centres.” This action follows the endeavour of certain followers of cycling to break away from the control of the association. The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club held a meeting- at Western Springs Stadium on December 30 under the auspices of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists. Three races for professional riders were also held. Prior to the meethig, the N.Z.A.A.A., under whose auspices all previous events held by the club bad been run, issued a warning to amateur riders against competing at this gathering. STATEMENT BY N.Z.U.C. “MEMBERS ARE ENTIRELY SAFE” A statement on behalf of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists in connection with tlio New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association’s decision tc suspend all officials and competitors who took part in the meeting held by the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club at Western Springs Stadium on December 30 was made today by Mr. J. C. Stewart, secretary of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists. Mr. Stewart’s statement is as followsff—“As was pointed out by me a short time ago, the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club’s members and officials who are concerned in the N.Z.A.A.A.’s suspension, being affiliated with the Union Cyclisto Internationale, by medium of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists, are entirely safe on the N.Z.A.A.A.’s suspension or possible disqualification. This step of the association will almost certainly lose the dispute for it. Auckland riders can rest assured of continued racing and of New Zealand championships this year.”
