CLASSIC PICTURE STOLEN
CUT FROM FRAME IN GALLERY VAN DYCK MASTERPIECE PARIS, Monday. Following on the theft of Vandyck’s masterpiece the “Concert des Anges’’ on January 1, another painting by Van Dyck has disappeared. The picture was cut from its frame at night in the Rich Museum at Aix-en-Provence, while only one watchman was on duty. Van Dyck's masterpiece, “Concert des Agnes," which is valued at £20,000, was dispatched at the end of December from Brussels to London, addressed to Mr. Godfrey Phillips, an art dealer. When the packing case was opened it was found that the picture had been completely cut out of the frame. The owner, Mr. Beclibache, says it was insured for only a quarter of its value. A former theft of another famous \an Dyck took place at Courtrai in December. 1907. This was similarly out from its frame and later sold to a Bruges hawker for 4s. The thief was eventually sentenced to imprisonment for four years.
