TEMPTATION TOO GREAT FOR SEAMEN FINED £2 FOR THEFT A case of whisky left to look after itself on the Puriri Wharf, where it had been discharged from the Tani wlia, was too much of a temptation for three young men who were charged at the Police Court this morning with theft. They were fined £2 each and ordered to make restitution. William Williams, aged 19, Frank Harold Burt, aged 22, and Harold Wil liam Clive McKinnon, aged 22, all seamen, pleaded guilty to stealing two bottles of whisky valued at £1 Os (id and belonging to Donald Leslie Clotworthy, on October 11. Chief-Detective Hammond said that the whisky had been left on the Puriri Wharf for conveyance to the licensee of the hotel at Neavesville. The three accused, who were on a scow, had been drinking. Seeing the case they broke it open and took two bottles. "They were very considerate as the case held a dozen bottles,” added the chief detective. Default of the fines was fixed at 24 hours’ imprisonment and the trio was given 24 hours in which to pay.
