DARGAVILLE NEWS

The Hobson Acclimatisation Society purchased 1,533 pairs of rabbits ears and 255 pairs of hawks’ feet since the beginning of the season to the end of last year. The secretary also reported at the last meeting of the society’s council that to date a sum of £ 8 11s 6d in fines for breaches of the Act had been recovered for tiie season. It was reported that 177 pheasants had been purchased and liberated last August.

With a view to devising' some means for the conservation of the shellfish, the Hobson Acclimatisation Society has forwarded a .request to the Minister of Marine that he might arrange for a comprehensive report to be made concerning the toheroas of the west coast of this district.

Over 150 residents of Hargaville and district attended a public farewell to Mr. W. G. Whitmore, manager of the North Auckland Farmers’ Co-operative, at the business premises, Hargaville, yesterday, when tokens of esteem and goodwill were made, prior to his departure to take over the full control of the stock dpeartment of the firm at WTianghrei. M.r. Whitmore has been connected with the North Auckland Farmers’ Cooperative for the past 10 years, two of which he spent at IRuawai, and the remainder with the Hargaville branch. He was appointed manager of the local branch three a.nd a-half years ago. He has fully identified himself with many public bodies and sporting associations during his residence here. On behalf of the Hargaville Chamber of Commerce, of which body Mr. Whitmore has been president, Mr. C. L. Bagnall presented him with a goldmounted pencil. Mr. F. A. Jones, the Mayor, expressed his pleasure on behalf of the citizens of Hargaville in handing to Mr. Whitmore a gold-mounted marble inkstand and a gold-mounted fountain pen.

From the staff of the local branch of the firm, Mr. Whitmore received an oak chiming clock, suitably inscribed. Huring the week the farmers of the district are to add their tokens of appreciation of Mr. Whitmore’s services to them, and the district, in the form of a combined presentation. Mr. Whitmore suitably replied to the expressions of goodwill made on behalf of. Mrs. Whitmore and himself, and thanked the donors.
