EPSOM REVIVAL
Te Aroha Fixture Responsible SOME NEW BLOOD Since the conclusion of the Auckland Christmas carnival, butmeti at Epsom has been quiet, but the appearance of the Te Aroha handicaps has been responsible for * mild revival among the trainers at Alexandra Park. There was a good attendance of the light harness elan yesterday morning but overnight rain made the main track soft, and exercise of a useful nature only was attempted on the sand circuit. * * * J. S. Shaw is at present enjoying a well-earned holiday in the South Island. The main portion of his big team is being attended to by C. Fairman and Roy Low. while W. Touke is paying special attention to Stonev and Great Change. The Te Aroha Cup candidate Warspite is in good heart, although he appears to have lightened up as a result of his strenuous Christinas campaign. A couple of good essays in the interval should see him O.K next week-end. A. Julian is busy with liis Te Aroha quartet. Explosion. Rolfc Audubon, Gold Treasure, and Wiriwliata. The latter is a shapely maiden square* gaiter by A 1 Mack front Gineta, both American imported trotters, and for a green one he is making a good showing. Gold Treasure is coming to hand slowly, but Explosion and Kolfe Audubon are in forward condition. Jim O’Kane is effecting considerable improvement with Eon Juan, and the big half-brother to Jewel Pointer is giving signs of usefulness. The aged mare Typiste. who was doing well for tho same trainer, has been turned out for another spell. R. Saunders is persevering with Lord Haldane at the trotting gait. When going square, the rough-kneed fellow shows promise, but: when the pressure is on he is inclined to lapse back to the pacing game. * * * F. J. Smith las landed from England a sturdily-built six-year-old stallion known as Dan Direct. He is roan in colour, and bred in the purple, being by Wellington Direct a f ull - bro.ther to Napoleon Direct (1.592)- His dam is Dana Patch, a daughter of Dan Patch (1.55). The roan, which prior to leaving the Old Country took a record of 2.17, has the very best speed and stamina strains in his composition, when thoroughly acclimatised should be an acquisition to Epsom candidates. In the capable hands of F. Smith, the nuggety pacer will have every chance to show his true worth. Alby Patten is busy with First Carbine, Satinwood. and a grey filly by Peter Moko from Ruby Huon. The latter is a well-turned mare, but will require time. Her half-brother, by Kelson Fame, who was showing promise, has been operated on. and will be indulged in a good holiday. Margaret Wallaceus bearing a bright appearance, and E. G. Sandall’s little mare is in great heart. She should be seen at her best when the Te Aroha fixture rolls round. No exacting tasks are being asked of Kewpie’s Guy. but Joe Gee lias the filly in nice trim for immediate engagements. The game old trotter Anseline is also hitting out with freedom, and is many removes from being a back number. W. Clifton is working Dad's Hope in saddle, and the Australian-bred gelding is accomplishing his tasks in pleasing fashion. The chestnut appears to relish this kind of exercise, and should do well with the weight on top. * * * lv. Morrison is keeping Benefice up to the collar, and the Rey de Oro mare promises to strip very fit when next taken to the races. While she seems to do best in saddle, she may be given an opportunity at Te Aroha to prove her staying powers in harness. Xothing is looking better than Bill Xightingale’s pair, Evelyn Locanda and Pavlova. So well are they pleasing owner Cucksey that it is quite on the cards their baggage will be labelled “Te Aroha” next week. Old Goldman, who is now trained on owner Hedley’s private track, is causing his connections some concern, tho trouble being a dicky leg. Tho one-time speedy son of Gold Bell is being treated to salt water exercise daily by his young attendant, X. Craig, and hopes are entertained that he will be recovered in time to take his place in the field for the Te Aroha Cup. Geo. Webb has a big team under his charge at present. Recent additions to the string are two mares by Logan Pointer, and a Lord Roberts trotter, which claims relationship to Gold Jacket, his dam being Lady S. Vanity Boy is pottering about heartily, and will be ready for a short race soon. His half-brother, Great Vanity, hrs furnished into a fine-looking novice, while Great Gold, who has been converted to the square gait, is trotting in promising fashion. * c # L. McMahon has taken Hohoro and the big Worthy Bond gelding in hand again for Mrs. Collins. The latter will take time to come to hand, but Hohoro gives .the impression that a sharp run or two will put him in good order for his saddle engagement at Te Aroha. Torpedo Huon is bowling along nicely, and Gold Seam is showing improvement. It is probable that Mignonne. the Matchlight filly, which won at Tima.ru at Saturday, w'ill shortly
join IMcMaJhon's stable, as she has been ‘ ' acquired by E. Parkes, owner of Gold‘ Jacket. a ‘ A HOLIDAY FOR 25 6D ' __ . “Hullo George. you’re looking prettl. i seedy on it. \N‘hat‘s wrong?” ‘.’ “Dfinno Jim. I feel rundown. Gnu.
